Goodbye!

I know it's been a while since I posted, but while I've lurked from time to time I have managed to make a little headway on my V20 and in hopes of forgiveness :-* offer these pic to the v20 gods (as well as senior, junior, and other members...) ;D

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y197/JeffXJ/6330e02d.jpg

Here's where I'm putting my finger through the " 'little-bit soft" transom.... Even though you could say I was fingering my transom, it's not what you think...really... ::)

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y197/JeffXJ/DSC00272.jpg

This is after I already removed the inner skin as well as the inner piece of plywood and some of the floor for better access. For those of you who may not have had the "pleasure" of experiencing this fun they nailed two sheets of plywood together for the core of the transome...at least on my boat. The lesson here is if you every want the experience of re-coring a transom let it be on someone else's boat. After the first couple of hours it's not fun anymore...

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y197/JeffXJ/DSC00274.jpg

An interesting note here: I found foam under the floor! I didn't think Wellcraft used foam in '71. Am I wrong or would that just happen to be the handi-work of a previous owner?

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y197/JeffXJ/DSC00277.jpg

All done (at least with hammer and prybars)! Good thing too! I lost count of how many times I missed the prybar and hit my left hand :o Luckily I'm a righty... ;D

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y197/JeffXJ/DSC00279.jpg

I took this last picture because I wasn't expecting to see the stringer like this. Notice the angle cut into the string so only the top was actually making contact with the transom? I'm thinking I should change this so the stringer buts up to the transom flush. I was also considering putting in knees (I hope that's the technically correct term :-[ ) Any suggestions here?

I still have some sanding and figuring to do, but I'm hoping to get the new core in this week since I have some time off of work. Hopefully the next pics I post will be of the transom being closed in and cored with coosa board. By the way, I tend to do things the hard way, but if anyone has some suggestions, tips, or tricks they'd like to share I'm all ears! ;D

Great Pictures ;D
Keep posting more pictures as you do the repair.
My big question is, the center top of your stransom. It notched down about 4 inches. Why is that ??, I see alot of the earlier boats the same way. Is this for a 20 inch shaft motor ?? Would it be ok if you didnt notch out the center on the new transom wood ??
That 77 v-20 on E-Bay for 100.00 bucks, with trailer would be a good deal for someone who knows how to rebuild the transom.

Willy, the total of pics is kinda big. I just looked and they are a little less than 300K. With 5 of them posted the total download for the pics are between 1.4 and 1.5 MB. :o So if you have a dial-up connection it would take a while for them to load. Sorry about that guys, I should've looked before I posted :-[ The camera was set on the lowest setting and I only bumped it up a little for a little more detail (I thought). I'll re-adjust it before I take more pics for posting purposes.

Hammer: Yes, the notch in the center lowers the mounting position of the motor for a 20" shaft. If I wasn't planning on enclosing the transom (and going with a bracket) then I would not only fill in the notch, but also close in the transom some so the opening in the back wouldn't be so wide. Who knows, I still have time to change my mind! ::) As for the 100 dollar boat on e-bay... They can kiss my transom... :-*This is a once-in-a-lifetime pain-in-the-a@# for me! ;D If there ever is a next time, I'll either pay someone or junk the boat! :P Shouldn't be an issue with this one though, Coosa doesn't rot (so they say). 8)

Your pictures answer a question I posted a while ago. Are the stringers attached to the transom with screws dowels or are they only glassed together? Don't give up it appears that you do good work! Billy Mac

It was a small tree I cut down a couple of months ago. I left the stump kinda high so I would have some options as to removing it. Unfortunatly I ran out of time that day and have been focusing my efforts on the boat. As a result the D@#$ thing is trying to come back. Sorry to any plant lovers, but this thing has been a minor pain since I bought the house two years ago....

Lesterus, I thought I was the only one that noticed that plant!

Jeff, great job, thanks a ton for the pics. Gives me a good idea what my '72 looks like under the floor.

By the way:
If there ever is a next time, I'll either pay someone or junk the boat!
AMEN TO THAT BROTHER! NEVER AGAIN FOR ME EITHER!

Too funny :)

He'd better either start smoking or selling with all that work ahead of him!

Just kidding Jeff, I know you can handle it and once your done you'll know what's under there for sure ;) I respect the "do-it-yourselfer" tremendously. ;)

Two points Jeff

1. I have been told by some fellows who buy and sell used boats as a past time/hobby/buisness that what guys would do to sell a boat that had a soft floor was to shoot some expanding foam into the cavities and let it set up.
Also I have been told that sometimes when a manufacturer put the foam into the fuel tank area to foam it in that it would also flow into other areas under the floor.
2. That stringer cut at an angle is not correct but sloppy workmanship on WellCrafts part. That should have been cut making contact at the right angle and epoxied in, then glassed in. Also if you go with a full transom, Good Idea then do as WellCraft did and add knee's that come up the transom about 14" from my memory. If that wood in that stringer is in good shape cut it back at an angle and make a scarf joint using one piece cut to be the right length to give you your knee also. Epoxy it in place and then glass it in. Guys like Skools can give you more details and have more experience than I will ever have but if I ever rip out my floor and transom to do that much work you can d@mn betcha that it will be stronger than what Wellcraft ever did there and done right.
