Hey guys,

I have one of those smart gauges that came with my 96 Johnson and it looks like this:

Okay, the back of the gauge looks like this (sorry for the blurry piciture, I tried to get as close as I could):

The wires coming from the engine that I think go to this guage look like this:

Anyway, here's the question. Do the ends of these wires simply plug into the back of the gauge as they are? Secondly, and definitely most importantly, how would I know which wire goes into which hole? The holes are numbered and the wires are all different colors. If anybody could offer help, I'd be greatly appreciative.

Here's another picture of the gauge. This one shows an additional purple wire along with an alarm. This is so confusing :-/

Here's a picture of my dash with newly installed gauges (though the smart gauge is not plugged in).

I thought I was given a speedometer along with the other gauges, but I've either lost it or never got it. So, I left the original one in along with the original water gauge, though I'll likely take out that gauge since the smart gauge will do the job...

This is what i've found out so far more to come tomorrow after i find my master marine wiring book that has all motors and acc. from 1968 to 2004
1-2-3-4
8-7-6-5

the first 3 below are tach hook ups:

Purple wire goes to pin 1
Black wire goes to pin 2
Gray wire goes to pin 3

Grounding these pins, will activate the following:

Pin 4, turn on no oil lite
Pin 5, turn on low oil lite
Pin 6, turn on hot lite
Pin 7, turn on check engine lite

Pin 8, is used to activate the warning horn, it supplies a ground to the horn circuit when any other warning circuit (pins 4 thru 7) is grounded.

Skools, you are amazing! You never cease to amaze me buddy. I can't thank you enough.

So, I can just push the ends of the purple, black, and gray wires into the pin numbers you've mentioned, right?

Okay, according to your helpful list, the black wire is the ground. Therefore, once I plug that particular wire into pin slot 2, the gauge will be grounded, which will then activate pins 4-7. But those pin slots still need wires in them, right? Is that the info you will hopefully be able to find in your master marine wiring book?

Thanks again and again.

I think I found the answer to my own question. It's amazing what you can find in these manuals when you look long enough!

1-purple
2-black
3-gray
4-tan/yellow stripe
5-tan/black stripe
6-tan
7-tan/orange stripe
8-tan/blue stripe

I hope all my wires match these descriptions :-[ I won't know till tomorrow...
