View Full Version : Internal tank
Here we go ;D
Before I purchased the boat this year, it sat for at least 1 year. The boat was winterized but has about ¼ tank of old fuel still in the tanks (I am guessing on the ¼ tank as when the boat is stationary the fuel gage reads empty, but when it is running and we are moving it reads about ¼ tank)
Before I purchased the boat it did start right up from the internal/old gas. I am currently running on an external tank and everything is running beautifully (knock on wood, fiberglass, grab a fake titty…actually grab two fake tittys ;D.) but I also think it is dumb to be lugging around the old gas and wasting the space with the external if I do not have to. So, 1st I want to drain the internal tank, can I just siphon it threw the gas line? Or any suggestions would be appreciated.
2nd, after draining the tank, what are the next steps I should be taking to clean out the old tank? Should I completely remove the tank or just drain, fill up with some tank cleaner, gas her up and go for it? :-X
The tank it self looks like sh!t, but I assume it does not leak. The hoses and clamps must of been replaced somewhat recently because they look pretty good.
Beers on me!

I disconnected the fuel hose from the engine or maybe the water seperator and ran the hose out the drain in the bilge area. Pumped the the fuel ball and it started draining right out. As far as cleaning out the old tank cant help you i had to replace mine, it leaked slowly. If your tank has a sticker that has Perry, Fl. on it, it's the original tank. Mine leaked on the bottom of my tank smelt a hint of gas down in the bilge area. Put a large bolt in the gas line when you disconnect it and run it thru the drain to your holding tank. Good Luck... Z

been there, tried that, all i got was HIGH, the anti-syphon valve woudl not allow me to syphon,
mine had a lot of old gas in it, about 1/3 of a tank, i just filled her up added some additive, and changed the water seperator, she ran rough for a while :-/ but straightened up. ;D

Ok here we go,
1st removal of the tank is best! But if it is the oringal thats not going to be easy, and not worth the effort!~!
Remove the tank cover, remove the sender from tank, Then siphon all gas as low as you can.
Then take some old rags to get what ever is left. From here you can fill with freash gas and a new filter
Change filter after first tank and you good to go!!
My tanks come out, I was able to was with hose and let stand to dry, this is the best way.

I'd do a combination of Zebra's and Cy's posts...run the gass outta the fuel-line and as long as you get a good flow and no water, there's probably nothing to worry about...then put back new gas and new filter (gas treatment won't hurt) and you oughtta be good to go... ;) ...

yeah agree with RAP that's what i did to my 250 Sea Ray and my 248 Wellcraft. Then just use the old gass as round up lol.
Alright, I removed the tank cover and everything is covered in 30 year old foam and it did not look like there was anything to remove to easily get to the internal part of the tank, and that thing was not comming out with out a fight. So, Plan B, tried syphoning the gas out threw the line :P Oh boy after a mouth full of gas we quckly went to what 90% of you said, run it out. I switch the line from the external, to the internal and ran the engine for about 5 min, then shut her down for a few min. and reran her for another 5 min. The engine seemed to shake alott more then normal, but I guess that is tobe excpected.
Thursday i am going to run the internal dank dry ( is that OK for the engine??) then switch to the external to get back in.
Then put I new filter in, and go from there.
Thanks for the ideas/help.
one more thing, when I have been running the engine I was using the ear muff thingamajiggies. But there is a port next to were the water comes out for the hose, can I run of off that port or is that just for rinse?
Probably a dum question but it needed to be asked ::)

Sean...we weren't talkin' about runnin' the motor to get the gas out...take another look at Zebra's post..."disconnect the gas line...pump the bulb"...that kinda thing...the idea was to keep the old gas outta the motor ;) ...anyway, glad it went OK...didja get it all outta there?... :D ...
...and there are no dummy questions on this board ::) ...trust me on that...
...can ya post a pic to show us the other water port on the motor?...can't picture what you're talkin' about...

what he said!! you do not want all that crap in your carbs!!
just get all you can out of the motor what ever way you can!!
Then I would add a new filter and fill with new gas, this way you running good gas with a little old but should be fine, change the filter after first tank.
As for the hose thing, I have never had one, but hear tell thats how you can rinse the motor out real well. But I am not sure if you can run from there??
Oooohhhh, Glad I posted before I went out on thursday ::) that could of been bad.
See what sucks is the fule line is hard lined right into the engine, so I gues I will have to disconnect there and pump what I can with the ball. Then fill her up.
Thanks for saving me there ;D
as for the port, it looks like this, actually it is this:

as you can hopefully see, next to were the water is drained for normal cooling is a intake for the hose to plug into.
But I;ll wait on this one until I get the goahead from hte pros. ;D
Alright, pump out as much as I can, I think there is about 12 gallons in there, then fill her up and change the fuel filter.
Actually, I need to find the internal fuel filter first, any hints? ::)
I have a external fuel/water seperater which I will take care of.
Gracious!

Sean, mine is a 200 johnson and it is located in the bottom right corner of this pic. I went to autozone and got a see thru fuel filter that fit. it works great and i can keep a eye on it to see if it gets dirty. Disconnect the hose from infront of the filter and pump your ball till a flow runs the fuel out. Take it thru the bilge area so gravity will help drain. Z

Every answear sparks another question :-/
some of you keep reffering to running the line thru the bilge area. OK, if I disconnect the fule line from infront of the internal gas filter, I remove the line intirely from the motor thru the sock (my gas line is hardlined into the engine, no plug) and I can just pump the gas with the ball. I am lost about the bilge area ??? ::) ???
Also I am going to pump the old gas thru the external water/fuel filter then change that once I am done, fill up with new gas, runn it out and then change again.
Sorry for repeating myself over and over, I just want to make sure i got it right. I got secreat spot thats ben holding some good sized strippers (30+lbs) the last few days and I need to make sure I get out there Thursday night, prime conditons!! ;D

The key is your pump ball, if its between the water seperator and the engine than disconnect at engine. If its between tank and water seperater disconnect at water seperator. You need the pump ball to start flow... take thru drain in bilge area so its low, fuel line should fit thru that drain into containers... When you have hose off, put a bolt into fuel line so it dont spill fuel inside area... Z

i may be being over cautios here but, i would disconnect the battery FIRST. and if the bilge pump is connected directly to the battery disconnect it too. all it takes is one spark!

good job racer, hell i would take the batteries out all together if they sit on that shelve in the center of the boat. here is a pic of the boat i'm workin on... the center door is where the batteries go on this one. Z

THanks for the heads up, that could of been ugly. :o :o
Zebra, when you removed your old gas tank, did it fit right out of the hatch? Just planning/preparing ahead.
THanks!

yes with alittle help from a engine hoist i have. cleaned the foam out all 4 sides, took out the fuel sending unit and put a large bolt sideways thru that hole and pulled up, it came out. It went in wasnt sure it was gonna come out but it did. New one i had built went in alot easier... Z
WOW, there was alot more gas then I thought! Well the drainage went off fine, just little spilage ::)
So I go to put some new gas in the tanks, ya the gas cap is stuck on! It almost look like it is a rubber/plastic material, but it has been sitting in the direct sun all day and it is humid out, so I assume it should come off tonight when it cools down.

I have a 84 V20 with a 60 gallon aluminum tank. The engine is a 150 Yamaha 2 stroke. The tank was leaking so I siphoned the remaining gas and pulled the tank. This is how I got the old gas out .
I bought a Yamaha male gas line fitting like the one on the engine and attached a 6 foot length of fuel line to it. I could then snap it on the fuel line from the 60 gallon tank and pump the ball to start the siphon. My tank does not have an anti-siphon valve. My tank does have a shut-off valve at the fuel tank. I siphoned off the gas into gas cans and used the gas in my lawn mower. Worked great! I usually drink beer, not gas! I had a built-in live baitwell that I wasn't using that was just large enough to drop a 24 gallon permanent plastic Tempo tank into without alot of surgery. I am now using the 24 gallon tank as a spare tank and have increased my fuel capacity to 84 gallons.
When I get around to it I will post pictures of this additional gas tank modification.

Hopefully a dumb question.
When I filled up yesterday on the internal tank, the gas starting comming out of the air vent. Is that normal??? :-/
Thanks!

Did it come out right away or when the tank was full?
The gas comes out of mine when the tank is full,
that is how I know it is full.
I have seen a plastic bottle that can be put over the vent to catch the overflow.
When it was full... I figured it was not a big deal, but wanted to make sure.
Thanks!

I try to prevent it from coming out by a) knowing about how much fuel I need to add and b) listening carefully for the gurgling noise when I'm approaching what I believe to be full tank range.

I agree, listen for the gugles.
The first couple of times I let the gas come out,
then I read where if you get caught letting the gas in the water,
CG could give you a fine.

All the old V20's had there vents below the rub rail, What a stupid Idea that was!!
The vent is even with the top of the tank, everytime you fill the boat some comes out, then when driving down the road and stop gas goes all over the place!!
I hated this and had to fix it!! Never leaks a drop now!!
Maybe you can rasie yours also??
