FUEL TANK HATCH

MY FUEL TANK HATCH IS SOFT, HAS ANYONE EVER REPLACED THE WOOD UNDERLINE ?

NEED DIRECTIONS AND PICS IF POSIBLE.

Its been documented on here. Can't remember who, but they did this and took pics the whole way. Not too bad of a job and when you are done it will be stronger than new.

You should be able to find it...somehow??

SAMLL PIECES OF PLAYWOOD IN LIKE LAYERS, GLUED TOGETHER WITH THE FIBERGLASS, OTHERS USE A SOLID PIECE. WHICH WAY BE BETTER?

I'd use a single piece...gotta be stronger than several smaller pieces...steelheader in post above describes what wood he used and it's solid :D ...

Yeah that is the post I was talking about...Steel did a mighty fine job for his first hatch job ;)

I admit I've never done it but if I did I would follow his post to the "t".

I did mine two years ago. Wellcraft used 4-5" square plywood pieces. It's actually scrap wood. Once you start, they come off pretty easy. Use a wood chisel. I cut one piece of marine plywood and took the hatch and plywood to a friend who was plant manager for Hell's Bay boats and they glassed and vacuum secured both pieces. The previous owner installed 2x2's crossways and screwed down thru the cover. What a mess.

on page 5 & 6, there are hatch items.

If it is a small hatch, MSBHAMMER and a couple of other guys
used a router and a piece of starboard to make replacement hatches.

Les, it's easy to remove the pieces. You can get them out and the hatch cleaned in less than an evening. Find a glass guy and have him glass the marine plywood when he does his next glass job. Everytime you step on that new hatch and it doesn't sag, you'll feel great.

RACER, MY BOAT IS A 1979, IF DESHET IS LISTENING, WHAT PARTS DO YOU HAVE AVAILABLE? I WOULD LIKE TO BY THE FUEL TANK HATCH, IF SOLID, AND THE CABIN HATCH (THE ONE THAT SLIDES FORWARD) FOR SPARE.
