As some of ya'll know, my upper gearbox is toast on my Alpha 1 outdrive. So I borrowed an engine hoist and yanked that sucker off of the boat. It was pretty easy to do.
Here is a pic of the boat:

Draining the lube:

Hooked up to the hoist and seperated from the stearn:

Cuz I'm a wuss!!! ;)
The outdrive has very few hours on it and the skeg is in A1 condition, and I didn't want to drop the thing and scuff it up. Know what I mean?
She really is a clean boat, but suffers from the same maladies all older V's suffer from, i.e. rod boxes all cracked up. She does have numerous spider cracks, but it doesn't really matter to me right now. Floor is solid, except over the fuel tank, but that I think, is an easy fix. The teak needs to be redone (winter project), and I need to reinforce the cuddy roof (see my other post). The boat is an absolute dream to run, handles the chop with ease and is very dry. I can't wait to get her fixed up and splashed again, but I gotta wait for the money tree to blossom first. ;D
I'll get more pics when I can, any other requests? No feet or supermodels, please.

LOLOL! I was wondering if somebody would notice that. It's actually water that came out after I cracked her free from the bellhousing. It's all gone now. *:D

I like your winter cover frame, ;)
as a matter of fact, last week, before you even posted these pix,
I made a frame similar to yours for mine.
I was going to take pix, but I was in a hurry, maybe this winter when I go visit the V, I'll take some looking under the cover.

KNOT:
NICE LOOKING BOAT, IT LOOKS LIKE A 1979 LIKE MINE.
FOR THE ROD BOXES, LOOK UNDER REPAIR, ROD BOXES
I'VE JUST REPLACED MINES AND POSTED SOME PICS AND WHERE TO GET THEM.
AS FOR YOUR OUTDRIVE, TRY TO REBUILT YOUR OWN. IT LOOKS THAT NOT ONLY YOU NEGLECTED THE OIL, BUT YOU ALSO HAVE TO REPLACE THE RUBBER BELLOWS IN THE BELL HOUSING, NOW IT'S A GOOD TIME, AND TO REPLACE THE IMPELLER WITH HOUSING AND EVERYTHING, NOT JUST THE IMPELLER.
TRY TO GET SOMEONE THAT REALLY KNOWS HOW TO REPLACE THE UPPER GEARS ASSEMBLY "COMPLETE" NOT JUST THE BEARINGS, BECAUSE THEY NEED SPECIAL ADJUSTMENTS THAT COME FROM FACTORY AND NOT EVERYBODY KNOWS HOW TO DO THIS.
FINALLY, IF YOU NEED HELP GETTIN PARTS, LET ME KNOW.

I never even saw the winter fram until you said it!! :-/ I might have to do somehing liek that, what you use for pipe, 1 1/2 or 2"??
Skools Out
10-06-2006, 01:30 PM
LOL That pipe can't be over a 3/4 from looking at the pics. But the futher North you go the heavier the pipe you had better use for more snow weight.

oh, yeah,VERY nice rig. welcome aboard. and i like the cherry picker idea. work smarter, not harder, right. only thing i would have done differently is to have someone else do it for me. then i would have sounded like mj."wada ya mean ya want a lift! that thing cant wiegh 100 pounds"lol. "break, y'all took a break yesterday"

Racer, I believe Skools was referring to the pvc on Frayed Knot's boat (the one in the pic above), not parishht's. So, no worries, you can still trust Skool's judgment ;)

Now, now...it's OK to be wrong once in a while, and all of ya are. It is 1.5" OD PVC. Fits perfectly in the rod holders. And it's not for snow, I use it to prop up my Wal-Mart special cover to keep the water from making it an above ground pool. The cover is to keep the crap from the trees out of my boat, not to repel water. We get snow like once every 2 years or something like that, so that is the farthest thing on my mind. None of the joints are glued, that way I can just take it apart and throw it in the yard when I'm ready to hit the water.
Thanks for all the kind posts fellas.

That is one clean looking boat !! :o :o
I was gonna shrink wrap mine. Friend does it on the side. Quoted me a hundred bucks, but I like your way to. After the pvc is installed, you guys just simply toss a tarp over it and tie her down to the trailer ??

Hammer, a 100.00 for the shrinkwrap is a good price. If I could get it done for that price, I'd go for it

Yep. I have a cheap boat cover from Wal-mart that kinda fits, toss it on, bungee it down.

Same as Frayed,
toss it over and tie it down.
HAMMER, next time you check out SBL,
check the gate to the right of the swing arms.
On weekends, the owner goes in to work around the park and leaves that gate open.
He then checks for anyone in the park before he leaves.
Anyway to the point, if the gate is open, my site number is 816A, if you wnat to look at mine.

New Bern, North Carolina. There is a reason I live here, and alot has to do with snow, if ya know what I mean. I was born in upstate New York. My Dad was a Marine, and this area is where they retired, so this is my home now. I spent time in the Coast Guard, went many places, including Alaska, and although I enjoyed the nomadic lifestyle, I have planted roots here. No plans on moving. I like the warmth and lack of too many people, it's just perfect for us...errr, I mean it sucks here, don't even think about moving here...you won't like it ;)
edit- schools, I just realized where you are, so you are a neighbor of sorts.

lol I go right thru your area alot heading to the Beach. I have a place at Emerald Isle. We often go down 70 to 17 in NB and eat at Chickfila at the mall. then follow 17 to Maysville. Then 58 to the beach. but mostly i go 70 to 58 at Neuse Sport Shop. We go to the coast every other weekend.

I reckon New Bern is just a tad outta the way to get to Emerald Isle. But that's the way we go, 17 to 58. We went to the aquarium last weekend. My first trip since they reopened it. It was pretty nice. All I could think was "yummy" seeing all those red drum just inches away.

Nice V Glenn........have you decided on where to buy the outdrive? You might want to look at Stern Drive Engineering Clearwater Fla....damn good prices whole outdrive or either section, 1 year warranty :)
