Outdrive won't trim up. The down button works fine. Up does nothing. No click, buzz or anything. I removed the switch and cleaned'm, ( all three ). checked the fluid. Seems if the trim motor was shot it wouldn't work at all. It's a '77 V-20 165MC I/O. TIA for any info.

I haven't had to work on one of those for a while, but there should be seperate relays for up and down. Switch the relays to see if your problem goes the other way, then replace the bad relay.

Don't know about Outdrives, but on an outboard, GREEN wire is ''DOWN'' and BLUE wire is "UP" ...

OB is the same colors. I had a relay go on mine way back when, then the motor let go! And the motor can go and still push just one way.

Trace and check all wires, then relays, then motor!

And if you haven't got a repair manual yet get one! The single best thing you will do is have that book!

That goes for everyone!! Thye first thing you should do when you buy a new or used motor is get a repair manual!

My old Rude was havin' T & T probs once...tech took his pocket-knife and put small slice in insulation on green and black, jumped w/ knife-blade and down she went...did same on blue and up she went...painted back over w/ liquid-tape, replaced offending relay and back to boating in no time ;) ...

It's most likely a relay problem, but it could be either one. Even the one that trims it down could be bad. The relays ground both wires to the trim motor, and when you hit the button the corresponding relay switchs to power while the other stays grounded. It's a fairly simple system once you have a book and diagram to see how it works. Another thing you do is have somebody hit the trim button while you see which relay won't click.

But remember that if you remove one of the relays, it won't do anything. They BOTH have to be in place for the trim to work.

I have an early 80's 150 Merc OB. The Tilt/Trim motor is seperate from the OB located under the splash well.

I have had two issues with my Tilt/Trim and I am not sure if they were related. The Trim would go up by itself and not turn off until the battey died. The switdh on the Trottle was replaced. The Mechanic also put a lot of Elec Goop around the inside if the switch because he thought water was getting in thru the throttle handle. That solved that problem. The second issue happen later that season and was similar to your issue. It was intermitent for awhile until a few weeks later it would not go up at all. It was a bad Soleniod in the Trim Tilt moter. This only took the mechanic 1/2 hour to diagnos and repair. I believe the part was under $30.

Now I'm really confused. It works again. Dunno what I could'a done other than clean and wiggle things around.

THose relays seem to get corroded easily and sometimes wiggling em around will tighten up a connection. Bad side is the problem will likely return at some point in time :-/

I'm not sure about i/o's, but my evinrude has an "override" screw on the port side. This got me out of a bind a couple of times before I replaced the solenoid.
