My "new" 1999 Merc 150 is overheating. I was hoping that it was giving false whistles because of dead battery but with a good battery it still alarms.
I started the motor and within 4 minutes the alarm went off. There was a good stream of water spraying out but the water was very hot.
I am going to take Kajun's advise and check the thermostats. Are these the thermostat housings?

Those hoses look like bleeds, not the t-stats. and the last pic looks like some sort of valve.
I went and looked at my old merc and that is where the T-stats are on it. they just don't look big enough in your pics. If there the old style t-stats you can get them from WEST MARINE or even a evinrude dealer.

Wish Bigshrimpin' would stop by...he's a good Merc man...Hey BIG!!...little help over here ;D ...
Recently someone pulled the heads to find SAND filled the water passages...anybody remember who?...the pictures told a sad, but very fixable story...
overheat problems:
bad t'stat(s)
bad water-pump (impeller)
water flow (blockage)
Let's see...what else?...

I will pull the thermostats tomorrow and cross my fingers.
When I was looking for the serial number earlier, I found something else not connected, I'll get pics of it tomorrow. It looked like it may have been related to the oiling system, assuming it had that. It runs on premix now.

TinMan was having overheat issues as well w/ his 98 200 Merc. He hasn't been around much lately......he did alot of diagnostic/trail and error......didn't get it sorted out yet but there was alot of speculation leaning toward the "poppet" valve. Mercs seem to have their share of cooling issues. A bevy of information to be had on THT about Mercurys. Hope you get it worked out, nice boat too , good luck :D

it might be some sort of a pcv valve ???
The poppet valve is located underneath the bottom of the powerhead on the intermediate housing. you have to remove the lower cowling pan to access it.

yea that was me with the sand issue...still havent figured it out...i have changed thermostats, heat sensor switches...pulled and flushed heads/powerhead, new waterpump and impeller...still overheats.....i bought a laser thermometer and was able to figure out which cylinder was over heating.....i then pulled the thermostats out and it runs 30 degrees cooler on that cyl on the hose, i havent been able to run it in the water yet.
sure hope yours is easier to find than mine has been.

Well, I when to church this morning and prayed for patience, then I stuffed myself at Golden Coral.
Then I removed the thermostats. I doubt that they were slowing down much water.
http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r222/randlemanboater/101_0080.jpg
Buttoned her back up, started and ran for about 3.5 minutes before the alarm came on.
AAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!
Kajun has turned me onto a Merc. Mechanic who helps people online (thanks dude), guess I'll see what he suggests next.
You can see that it pees good at idle.

I did stop in Walmart after lunch and pick up a couple items. Some 5200, some silicone sealant, and a new winch strap (the hook is tied on to the old one).
But instead of doing anything else to the boat today I did what any good southern dad does on Sunday afternoon, I gathered up the kids for some shootin practice.

If it were a thermostat problem, the water would be coming out cold because none would be circulating through the engine block and picking up heat. If the water is coming out hot, it is a insufficient flow problem. Check your water pump(s).

My 150 MERC didn't spray a steady stream either.
This may be a stupid question, but are you sure it is the overheat turning the horn on? Try unhooking the overheat sensors one at a time to see if it is actually the overheat sensors doing it. There is also a chance that parts of your old t-stats are obstructing flow somewhere in there fropm the looks of what you removed. Try running it with the t-stat covers off fopr just a few seconds and make sure water is flowing up to that point with a good stream.

Hmmm, maybe a bad sender? Have you put your hand on the heads while she's running? Maybe she's not really hot afterall? I do know that Mercs don;t pee till the stats open, then they pee different as the stats open and close, hence the reason not consistent as noted above. Your stats have been hollowed out, so that shouldn't be the case.
Just trying to keep the flow of ideas going.

I appreciate all the ideas guys.....we will solve this thing.
Skook's, I havent seen any dirt dobber signs, but that is something I will look for.
Ferm and Air, I am not sure that it is actually overheating, I will try the bad sensor theory too.

the barb fitting is part of the idle air system, as the engine warms up, it allows more air into the intake trac to lean out the mixture, it should have one of the barbs connected to a hose taht runs to the front half of the engine, the other barb is left open.
Checking the sensors is a good starting point, its the ones with the tan/blue wire.
Go ahead and put a water pump in it, its regular mantance on a Merc, its the best starting point for figuring out whats wrong.

This might be a dumb thought, but you said its an auto oiler that has been disconnected - I wonder if they disconnected everything including the low oil alarm? *
Usually there are different beeping patterns for overheat and low oil. *Find out which is which and go from there. *
Can you put you hand on the block without burning it after a few minutes?
I had a friend that burned up a 150 force. It had a good stream of water, but alarm started going off and he didn't know any better. The water coming from the pisser was hooooot and he kept gettin it till she died.
Good luck! *Nice pics - is that your service weapon *8) ;D
P.S. I know nothing about Mercs - never owned one so this is all hearsay, your honor.

The water coming out of the pissers should be warm, this means it has picked up heat within the engine and carried it out. *If it's hot, that means the water is spending too much time in the engine/there isn't enough flow. *This is a sign of a bad water pump. *If the water is cool, but the engine is hot, this means the water is bypassing the engine and just going through the manifolds. *This indicates a stuck thermostat. *If the pee stream is cold and the engine is cold, this indicates a thermostat that has failed open. The fact that you said the engine is loder than normal also indicates a lack of water flow and now I can say with some confidence that your pump is bad.

just remember to put the drive in fwd gear before you take it off, that way when you put it back on, you can keep the shift shaft in time.

think about the shift shaft in clock positions( looking over head after you pull the lower unit). 12 is fwd, 10:30 is neutral, 9 is reverse. 1 thru 8 will appear as neutral, but its not. Keeping it in fwd( and the controll box) will allow you to rotate the propshaft to spin the driveshaft to help puttuing the housing on the impeller and to align the driveshaft splines when you put it back on. Put a little grease on the splines( driveshaft and shift shaft when reassembling) and get someone to help you hold it up while your getting everything aligned, it also helps to have the engine trimmmed down so everthing aligns correcetly. After you get a nut on it, pull it up a little( so the shfit shaft slines are ingaged) and get your helper to shift the mototr from fwd, neutral and back to reverse while you're spinning the prop by hand, it should lock in fwd one direction, freewheel in neutral, and lock in revers. Better to find out now if the shifting is off rather than wait for you to get all the nuts and bolts tight. If the shifting isn't correct, drop the lower unit and start over( remember to put the shifter back in fwd before your helper gets out of the boat)

I appreciate that bro, but I love to worship the lord with my church family. Plus today is Ash Wednesday.
I don't have much confidence in getting the fix today.
I think I will end up pulling the heads and finding sand and seashells all through the block.
But that ok, I'm learning some good stuff as I go.

If it was me, I would go down to the auto parts store and buy one of those cheap pocket thermometers that you can use for A/C work(but they read up to 220). Put that up next to the heads and see if they're actually running hot.

SUCCESS!!!!!!!!
I guess a new waterpump is what it needed. I just ran it for 30 minutes on the hose and no warning buzzer.
I don't know if its because of the new waterpump pumping stronger or because of all the beating I did with the rubber hammer before I found the last bolt holding the gearcase on, but a bunch of sand came out of the motor while running it. I would say it was a good handfull.
Man am I relieved.
