View Full Version : Done with FLuke!!
Well, I have been fluke fishing about 3 times a week since July, and after my 1st drift today, I decided I was done. ::)
Decided to change the pase and target sea bass for the next month until the water cools and the stripers make there grand fanaly. ;D ;D ;D ;D or October 1st (opening of Black fishing!!)
Wasn't sure how we would do, so aftere the 1st 4 or 5 keepers we threw back, we decided we can get enough for the Restraunt and started filling the cooler.
kept fish to about 5 pounds

Sean......what do you change when target them instead of fluke? Clams? Different rigs? I caught one while fluking this weekend.....almost as big as the big boy you got earlier this season.....just under 6 lbs. We had stuck the tentacle end of a squid on the hook. Nice job......
I was going to start a new topic but I'll just piggyback.....
My buddy baited the rig and was fishing it but it was my rod.....he left it in a rod holder and I was next to it when I saw a hit. I picked it up and set it and offered to give it to him to reel in.....he told me to go ahead.....as a result we are claiming equal credit for the fish. You can find his picture on another forum with this fish. ;D
On the fluke side we brought home 9 keepers after a slow start....

Sean, I will definately make it a point to head out your way in October. I just got off the phone with my fishing buddy(told him about your offer) and he is looking forward to it also. We are heading out to Block Island tomorrow (Tuesday @ sunrise) because he wants to target some bonita and albies, so this should be an adventure. I have yet to make it out to Block Island and this will be my first trip.
Nice sea bass Kevin, way to go!

good job Kev ;)
Whale, Nice fish ;D I did see it on another forum, are you also SWEDEman?
When I target them I usually either am on the reaf/ boulder feild, or on the down slope as compared to Flukeing I like to be directly next to it and I look for reefs, boulder feilds that are in atleast 50 - 70ft of water( other wise you will get alot of juviniels and scup).
The big girls are starting to show back up and the season actually peeks in in Nov/Dec as the water cools off, then they are one of the 1st inshore species back around March/April.
The rigs I am using are basicly high/low rigs with just a litle squid skirt/buck tail to help the presentation and either a wie gap fluke hook or a 4/0 or 5/0 Gamakatsu off set hook (bigger hooks save you from realling in scup all day, instead of Sea Bass ;D).
We use, anything from squid strips, Mackreal strips, live or dead chogies, and clam bellies.
My favorite condition is when there is litle wind and we set up directly on the high spot of the reef and slowly drift around it until you find the hot spot, the throw your reck anchor and fish away. I've heard that the big ones are more domenant and will usually strike baits 1st, so if you are getting alott of shorts, it time to move on.
I'm heading out tomorrow to check out a hunch I have on a out side reef, so we will see.
Shawsee, good luck @ Block, I heard the SW Corner is filled with Large, just becareful of the EEZ!!! ;D
FYI - those world class Black Fish spots, are currently being classifed as "potential" world class Sea Bass Spots ;) ;D

I've got another buddy itchin to go too.
