1988 Mercury Black Max 175
Water seems to be circulating fine.

I have never owned a mercury before.

At idle should the water that shoots out the pee hole be a little warmer then others outboards say (evirude and yamaha)

I read on iboats that the pee hole water in the mercurys doesn't shoot out until the thermostats open up.

All the others motors I have owned except my 225hp seadrive the water came out almost as quick as the engine started.

thanks

I posted on other thread, but yes, water will be hot because they don't pee until up to operating temp, 135 or so I believe.

Mercs are usually equipped with 158 degree thermostats.

deshet..if you dont have one yet..i'd highly recommend a laser thermometer ,they like $30 at harbor frieght....that way you can get some acurate temps on each cyl and head.

Stink, your buddy may have removed the thermostats.

My buddy cant even change a spark plug so I highly doubt it lol. ::)

I have heard it cause that though. Maybe the previous owner did. :)

Are the thermostats on these failsafe?

Can the get stuck closed? Do they open and close like it a car or do they just stay ope was you reach operating temp?

thanks

Open and close just like a car. They can also collect muck / corrosion and stop to function.

Especially in saltwater. They're easy to change and the price isn't bad either.

dropped lower unit yesterday and insttalled new water pump.

I reinstalled the lower unit and it pees water fine, but I don't have any forward or reverse gear. i do have some forward gear if I go all the way forward. Do I have to drop the lower unit again?

It there a easy way to line every thing up? I tired to line up the gear shift in the lower unit but I could not see how to do this.

thanks

Yes, your gonna have to drop the lower again. After you drop it, put the shifter in forward....then on the lower unit rotate the shift shaft, can't remember which way. I want to say that the prop should rotate freely in reverse when its in forward, but it won't rotate in FWD at all. Then reasseble everything. Make sure that the water tube and shift shaft line up while putting all back together.

Good luck

Got it running it is peeing and shifting well.

I am going to install the thermostats but do I really need them?

Should water come out the exhuast ports in the mid section directly below the block?

thanks

Yes, you need the T-stats, she'll burn cleaner running at the proper temp. Yes, water will come out the exhaust ports in the mid section, I want to say even before it warms up, but its not alot of water on the muffs, probably because there is no backpressure?

anyone know the torque spec for the prop

on my evinrude I just tighten, back a 1/4 turn then put in pin. But this is a little different.

I tighten it untill it felt tight but I don't know if that is correct.
