OK, Ill give this a shot. Take the hull and cut out the WHOLE transom. Now lay the old outdrive on the deck of the boat close to the transom (maybe even slightly hanging off). Now launch hull into a deep boat ramp and drive off.

Congrats on a Job well done. ;D

I would think you'd have to rebuild the whole transon and from what Stinky said I don't think he has a high regard for Bayliners. Once you rebuild the transom you then cut the correct size hole. Billy Mac

There is a reason we are called Wellcraft V20!!

But if you drive or tow in this matter, your Bayliner out to the 10 mile mark due east, they are sinking a chain of Bayliners, they calling it Bay reef ;D

I guess they don't have a Bayliner.com ::)

Just add some of that there White Contact paper, inside and out, redrill you better then new!! ;D

OK for real now. If the wood you have there now is good (no rot) then what you need to do is this.

from the inside of the boat, measure 6 inches bigger all around the hole, take a saw, Square the hole off. Clean the glass well.
Now take 2 pieces of 3/4 ply same size of the hole, glass them toghter, Cut new hole now, then glass that into the hole, you good to go!

Thats the short story.

best plan cut just the wood out from the inside as much as you can replace with a 1 piece plywood replacement and glass in 2 new 3/4 plywood pieces.

Yeah, I can't imagine there would be any adaptors available and any homemade ones would require more work than replacing the transom. Don't be tempted to bolt a panel to the transom instead of replacing it. Have seen this done several ways and each one has ended up in the landfill.

I was just reading this post and realized no one told him
to make sure that his cuts are made using a 45 or 30 degree chamfer. The wide cut on the outside and the narrow on the inside.

If it were mine and I was dead set on installing a merc I/O , Id follow skools advice. Cut as much plywood out from the inside to the outer skin. Leave the outer skin in tact. A 4an a half grinder works well with a 60 grit flapper sanding wheel. Grind all wood and glass out of the area to be refitted. Cut a template out of cardboard to fit that spot. Trace pattern onto marine ply,cut ply, sand to fit. Glass all back in, with resin and glass.

believe it or not Volvo used to offer an adaptor to install an sx type drive(same bolt pattern as a merc) in the hole an AQ came out of, never seen on in person, just saw it in a catalog once, got to be expensive$$$$$$$$$

Ok decided to Replace it all Take all the old wood out and put new ? I was told that if I take all the old wood out of transom that I needed to screw some 2x4s to the back or My transom
would lose its shape it this true

The problem is, like Sea Ray's, Bayliners just don't have the structrual integrity for a project like this. You can build up the transom all you want, but in the end, unless you go through and beef up the stringers and add another 1/2" of glass to the entire bottom, the thing is not gonna work. The new engine will probably torque the hull in two. At the very least you're definitely looking at seperation of the stringers from the hull because there just isn't enough tabbing connecting them. Sorry man, but I think it's a lost cause.

What do you mean A project like this the boat had a V8 in it with a mercruiser the outdrive went bad so the guy that had it cut the hole bigger to put a volvo penta drive on it then he bought a trophy with no engine or lower unit so he pulled everything from the bayliner and put it in the trophy now the bayliner has a bigger hole in it and I need to fix the whole to put a mercruiser back on it

Well you have gone this far might as well keep going.

After you get all the wood out an the glass clean, glass all your new wood in, then throw in some Knee boards for extra support.

2 part foam can be had in most boat places, and on line.

Just one thing, be careful of foam, to much in a tight space it will push out and torque things out of wack! People have bubbled there floors with the stuff in the past!!

Knee boards for extra support.
Can you explain this do you mean from the stringers to the new transom are across the back of the transom

eugene1e, there is a good book from West Marine
that explains a lot of what is being explained here.
It is not that expensive and really informative.

Here is a screen shot of the front cover:

I was trying to find some knee board pic here, I know there were here some place?

But any way what you do is take a board and attach it to the stringers, and against the transom glass all in, this will give the transom extra strength.

I drew this one, you should get the idea
