Looking at a 1977 v20 out board with transom problem and wondered if anyone had dealt with similar problem before. The transom cap is metal, which doesn't appear to be an original item, and is cracked, along with the transom, at one corner. I suspect that there's some rot causing this, although not visible. Anyone raise or replace a transom on this type of boat (could raise the transom and use a bracket and use the well for something else). The well limits access on inside so not sure how to do this, other than cutting some of the well out where it meets the transom. Have modified fiberglass boats some, but don't want to get into more of a project than I intended and wonder if anyone has tackled something similar. Thanks.

It sounds like it is in need of replacing. I did this to my 1983 CC which we took the boat apart and made the repair from the inside. The rub rail has screws under it which hold the boat together and we removed the inner liner and it was not that hard of a job. There have been others that have done it this way and several have done it other ways. If you want more info about the process let me know.

If you want an off the wall incomplete transom rebuild goto General and (right now) to page two click Specs and goto page 4, that's where I found out I needed to replace my transom.

You can cut out the splash well and install a full transom and add a bracket. Take a look at my gallery. Just another optyion for you to think about.

What they are saying will give you a lot more options and room. That would be the way to go. :)

That metal cap is factory ... ugly, ain't it?? :P ... it's on mine, too ... If I's gonna do what yer talkin' about, I'd go back w/full transom, remove splashwell and leave area open for portable baittank or build in bait tank ... if ya don't want a baittank, do it like 2nd Chance ;) ...
