when i put my motor in (150 merc) gear, it slams against the transom. i thought it was loose or the transom was failing, but thats not it. i can stop the problem by trimming the motor all the way up and back down before getting on plane, this seems to work. i'm leaning toward a leak in the trim system.

any thoughts?

When tilting up and down does it work well?? When up does it leak down slow??

When up and you lean on it does it go down?

Is the fluid full?

How about the trim bar underneath, did it rot and fall out?

good point reel, i went out by myself this morning and did that, kinda. thats the beauty of nfb steering. now, i think it is in the foot. are there "clutches" in there to allow if you hit something? i have to take it to the shop for a water pump next week, i'll get the mech to look into that.

Grab the foot with the motor in the normal run position and pull and push to see it there is any movement from the location of the lower rubber bushings (does the same as motor mounts) about half way between the powerhead and cavitation plate toward the front of the motor.
I forgot what their called. Isolation dampers or something.
Well it could be upper or lower motor mounts.

Sounds like a internal cylinder leak. I might have to rebuild the ram?

Should never come down at all.

Wait I have another Idea worth a check?

Look at the release screw, I had a friends that had vibrated lose a little and he kept getting a slow leak down!

frayed, put a gear lube monitor on it, they make one that will retrofit, not much to it, you can make one with a few fittings, some hose, a clam shell, you will need to rob or buy the resevoir if you want the alarm function, still cheaper than the kit
