Hey guys new to the site and just got my 1st boat. yesterday August 8, 2007. Guess what it is? Yep, a V20 1975 solid as a rock.
I noticed a problem this morning, i was titing the motor and noticed a little smoke coming from under the cover. Removed cover and noticed wires were hot and some of the wire covering even started to melt.
Any suggestions on how to stop that from happening?

Welcome to the site.
First, what motor do you have?
Second, make sure your connections are wired correctly.
Make sure all your connections are clean.
There could also be a short in the tilt motor.
Is there fluid in the resevoir?
These are things I would check,
but the mechanics will be along to give more ideas.

ok unplug the plug under the hood that feeds that motor then slide the 2 wires out of the plug and use a battery charger or good battery and hook one to pos. other to ground one way will make it go up other will go down see if they get hot doing that. if so then you have a bad motor/brushes but if not then you have a poor connection in the relays or on that plug you took apart. it can be a bad relay that is dirty inside causing resistance.

schools is headed the right way, but before you do that, go back and make sure the trim power leads at the battery are hooked up correctly, they are both black cables but one has a piece of red wrap around it near the terminal end. I did the same thing years ago, and have seen it done many times over

Ok guys, just seen your posts and will try them tomorrow. But this is what i learned today and might shed some more light on the subject. Today tilt would not go up. took cover off, checked over wires all connections tight and clean. opened the cover that housed 2 fuses. unplugged and inspected visually and reinstalled. this time motor went up not down. Figured i must have switched fuses and 1 was bad. It was. but i also noticed before this happened motor tilt went up and down very, very slowly. If i remove 1 of the fuses it will go up very quickly. Put fuse on other side, motor goes down quickly. Plug both in motor goes down or up slowly and wires get hot. Now i am new to this but thinking a wire may be crossed somewhere. Tell me what you pros think.

what wires got hot this time? Spare is fired sounds like you have a relay that is stuck on only half of its contacts inside just replace both relays and you shouldbe good best to be safe.the trim wires to the batt what is he talking about this isn't a 70's motor lol.
