Ok I talked to skools last night onn the phone and I was trying to figure out why I don't have spark? And what year motor I have?
The sticker with the numbers is gone and I can't find anything on the motor?
So here is what I have for a motor.

Compression was 5 cyl 95 to 99 and 1 being 118
The guy said that he paided to have the top rebuilt, but looks like they only did one cylinder.
Motor turns over great, Tilt & Trim works great!
Thought here is maye I will use it?? Or at least get it running and sell to some one as a running motor??

Find the freeze plug looking thing . Usually on the top on Evinrudes. With numbers stamped in it . Looks like the top of a 3/8 carriage bolt. That is the serial/model #.
It will be in the powerhead.

No spark. Check power pack and stator,

That there appears to be an 86-87 2.7L LOOPER MJ, or at least that's the ignition system on it. Only the 86-87 90 degree engines used 2 power packs, 88 went to a single pack. What all have you taken off of the engine? I see the airbox is missing. DO NOT RUN IT WITHOUT IT!!!(Don't ask how I would know :-[) That there is the same basic engine that is listed on FLEABAY. What all tools do you have to diagnose it? Are all 6 cylinders dead, or just 3? If all 6 are dead start by disconnecting the black with yellow tracer wire from the power packs(should be one to each coil, with one wire in the main harness and another going down to the shift linkage). These are the ignition grounds to shut it down.
The engine welch plug is located in the back side of the block in the recess. Although most of them have fell out over the years.

So looper is the good one right?? other being cross flow.
I have not checked the spark myself yet? I am getting a spark plug tester tomorrow.
I have not taken anything off the motor yet what you see is what you got.
The other guy took off the air boax but I do have it!
CB has the multi tester and some other stuff. I hate eletric work!!
But now that I have the gas tank all fixed up i plan to move to the motor, tomorrow after noon.
Buty i habve to get some plug wires, one is missing and one is broke >:(

Start off by disconnecting the shut-off grounds, ignition switch's do go bad on JOHNNY-RUDES(or just about any of em). Also check the flywheel magnets to see if they have come loose. The 35 amp flywheel had the magnet problems. Hopefully you can get access to a peak reading volt meter if the ground doesn't do it. The mag used on these requires a peak reading volt meter to properly diagnose them. You should have around 200-225 volts AC coming out of the stator to the packs at cranking speed. And at least 125 to the coils is what my book says. Although my looper only gets 75 at cranking speed(new everything too), but has 150 at idle.
Do you have a picture of the carbs? I can't really tell that well, but it looks like you may have 200HP carbs. And yep, that's a looper. I'll bet she's better on fuel than your 175 is, I know my 140 looper uses about 2/3rds the fuel my 115 cross-flow does.

I will get Carb pictures tomorrow.
This boat has a regular key switch not on the omc controls.
Not sure I will get them test done that you say?? But we will pick one thing at a time.
Plug wires tomorrow and see what happens, I can't take anything this guy says as truth so I have to start from stratch.
Thanks!!!!

Check it for spark first. That there is one TOUGH SOB!!!! It's the same basic engine as my 140. Not bad on fuel either when the carbs are right.

1987 Great same as my 175 is, which means I have the Clymer book for it.
But I am sure I am going to get morer help then the book offers right here!
I will get Carb pic's & Jet numbers tomrrow, and Hopefully wires so I can start checking things.
thanks guys!!

first thing make sure you don't have a lanyard on the dash somewhere cause that will do this to your motor lets them turn over but no fire.

Ah excellent thought...check the obvious. That's where us men normally screw up. For instance have you ever lost your hat only to find it on your stinkin head? :o

follow the harness from the red plug at the motor and when you see the yellow/black wire plug into the brains unplug it on both and then test the motor with the plugs out to see if you have fire on the motor. don't start it with the wire unplugged or it can't be cut off

grab the big feeder wire from the controller andsee what you have on it to connect to the motor. if no red plug i think you found the problem then.

Is that the best you can do? You are the "deal of the century man" Have you ever bought a boat for more than a grand? I doubt it ;D
Take your time...you know I've taken my time on that dang helm. ::)

MJ, I would disconnect the black with yellow wire before you say that engine is junk. It is normally something simple with these loopers to keep them from runnin. If you get her runnin, she's worth alot more.
