I've seen the little 3-ways on smaller motors where I suppose it diverts the water for a temp sensor but that doesn't look familiar to me. I KNOW Ferm and Skools will be on the scene shortly. Hold tight big guy, help is on the way! ;)

Ain't got nothin dere?

under 3000 rpms it lets water run from the midsection to the heads to cool them evenly at low rpms but at or around 3000 rpms it opens to let the extra water from the faster turning pump go back out the midsection thru the exhaust to cool the exhaust better at higher rpms and hotter motor exhaust temp. it was only needed on southern motors you can put blank caps and remove it if you wanted. better yet trade it off the spare motor or just open it up replace the 2 o-rings inside it. easy fix.

ok tool time

this is a V4 motor but same exact part as V6

here's the valve

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a46/Skools_Out/Motors/MVC-001S-5.jpg

here's where it gets water from when it's under 3000 rpms

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a46/Skools_Out/Motors/MVC-002S-5.jpg

here's where it is going to under 3000 rpm

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a46/Skools_Out/Motors/MVC-003S-5.jpg

here's where it goes above 3000 rpm out to the pisser on the lower housing from the above pic

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a46/Skools_Out/Motors/MVC-021S-1.jpg

here it is under 3000

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a46/Skools_Out/Motors/MVC-018S-1.jpg

here's above 3000

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a46/Skools_Out/Motors/MVC-019S-1.jpg

first you need to remove below screws and nuts

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a46/Skools_Out/Motors/MVC-009S-3.jpg

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a46/Skools_Out/Motors/MVC-010S-3.jpg

then GENTLY pull out on the throttle arm till pin is out of the valve

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a46/Skools_Out/Motors/MVC-011S-2.jpg

now GENTLY pull out till accessible

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a46/Skools_Out/Motors/MVC-012S-2.jpg

now mark a location of the center part to out side so you replace correctly then pull out slide pin

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a46/Skools_Out/Motors/MVC-013S-2.jpg

then pull out the insert carefully

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a46/Skools_Out/Motors/MVC-014S-1.jpg

heres the valve taken out

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a46/Skools_Out/Motors/MVC-016S-1.jpg

clean this part very well

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a46/Skools_Out/Motors/MVC-017S-1.jpg

here's the inside of the valve with a seal in this ones case some have o-ring

http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a46/Skools_Out/Motors/MVC-015S-1.jpg

you can grease the rubber seal if in good shape and then light grease on the valve and reinstall usually stops the leak.

or you can use the cap covers as below better to use the bypass system

I ended up replaceing that valve on my V-4. I had re-sealed it several times with no luck, it had a groove cut in it from the years of service. That valve also bypass's the T-stats for high RPM opersation. It puts pressure on the diaphrams to make the T-stats seal off and bring it up to 160 at low RPM's. Like SKOOLS said, around 3000 RPM's the valve diverts the water pressure to allow the cooling water to bypass the T-stats and the engine temps drop. If you had a temp guage you could watch the temp drop when the pressure is diverted. The higher temps help these loopers to idle better and burn the fuel easier.

I have a heat gauge but have ot hooked it up yet?

Tan wire tyo gauge and ground the gauge right?

I ment to do that the other day also but forgot.

Thanks again!

Tan wire is for the overheat hot horn. You have to add an extra wire and a sending unit to use a guage.

I have no horn, that was missing in the mess. Can I just change the location of the tan wire and use it??

If I have a gauge I no need alarm, I am always looking at the gauges!
and I mix so no need to have buzz for oil.

nope tan wire must be alarm save a motor hook the horn back up. run extra wire. the tan goes into the brains on these motors.

Pretty much all of the parts for these things are dealer items MJ. You can get electronics aftermarket, and major engine parts aftermarket. But the little stuff is dealer items. When you say bypass cover, do you mean the valve or the T-stat cover?

I want to get rid of the bypass thing earlier in this tread, I cleaned and greased today, and it drips now instead of spraying.

Thanks!!

Are you sure it isn't the hoses leaking? I just went through this with 200 I just got. It looked like the valve dripping, but it was a hose spraying down towards the valve. The valve will run you about $75 for a new one. My 85 had to be replaced due to a leak that wouldn't stop with new seals and greasing. I would keep the valve if it was mine. The other style is for the closed deck blocks(93+) with a different cooling flow pattern and a pressure pop-off valve. If it has made it 22 years, why not just put it back for another 20 years?

Its not a hose, I ck'ed all. I forgot about this leak over the winter, but I started the motor today for the first time, and I saw it again.

I will have to find a good source of parts and get a new one. Thats the bad news, the good news is that I gt the motor started and it started like I have been using it all winter!!
I got the GPS working today, Got the Fish Finder all wired up, Trim Tabs working the right way, I wired them last fall backwards so that when I pushed the right the right would move its suppose to be the other way:head:

All and all a good day! Now all I need is the hard top to get delivered to get the rest ready!

Thanks Therm, I will try to find the part Monday.

Thanks Therm!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have the same motor on the ground at home for parts, i will try that first??

I am trying not to strip that motor to much cause it is suppose to be a good motor?? It came with the boat and looks like hell, they were trying to fix eletrical but I never did know what?

I have been thinking if i could find someone to do a complete rebuild I would do it.
E-Tec and the rest is nice, but not sure I want to spend that kind of cash for a motor I will never be able to fix!!
Nice 89 Looper all rebuilt would be a awsome motor!! Just need to find someone trust worthy to do it and do it right!

Thanks again!!!!!!!!!

Tell ya what MJ. You come down to FLORIDA and do some fiberglass work, and I'll fix your outboard.

I HATE FIBERGLASS WORK!

I wish was a good enough glass man to take you up on that!! But i am also fiberglass handicaped.

But I will mail you my motor and let you rebuild it!
