I have a problem only when the engine is cold. It runs very rich/rough for about 5 min and then all is fine. After that its fine all day. It has a mercury 2bl carb with the elec choke. I have tried adjusting it with no success. Was wondering if anyone else has experienced this problem or converted it to a manual choke.

I went manual with mine!! It doesn't take long for it to warm up anough to push the choke in!! And don't forget.
I did one time and it was running like crap!! I couldn't figure out why?? Then I remembered!

I may just end up doing that. I found a tech tip on the carb put out by mercury years ago. I plan on trying that and if it dosen't work I will convert to manual.
Thanks

Its only just begun!! Them 165 are getting old!! And they nickle and dime you to death!
I know I have been there. The single best advise I can give you is to keep as much water out of the bilge as you can!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And spray WD 40 or some kind of rust perventer when ever you can.

I know what you mean. I have spent more than I care to mention on this motor and I keep wishing I had bought the outbord version. Thanks for the tip.

Start looking for a bracket !! When you get a good fined by it! You will be able to convert this easy!! I did and its the best thing I ever did!! All you will need is some 3/4 ply, bolts, bracket, reasin. cloth, and a motor of your choice.
One day for the demo, 1 day for the hole repair, 1 day for the bracket install, 1 day to install motor and cables and all that good stuff, and 1 day to make all nice and neat. So about 1 week and you are ready for no more hassle of the I/O and I sold all the old parts for $825 thur the want ad

i have an io and it runns great.you should check the filters first. (in the carbuatorand the water seperator) thoses filters are all was dirty in my enigine .just clean them out and it wil run good again.i can tell u a nimber of story about the io. how i made it home on 5 clyinderdoing 20 knots and not evben noticing a clyinder out till i pulled a spark plug . my father had water coming out of the dip stick and made it home from montauk (90 miles) rebuilt the engine and it ran for 8 years after. these engine are very reliable, and it does cost much for parts or even to repower.
