96 150 Johnson Ocean Runner

Does any one know anything about a 96 Johnson 150 Ocean Runner? Any pros or cons that you know about?

My Brother has a 96 Evinrude 150. It's very reliable but thirsty. The 150 burns about 2.1 MPG @ 4000rpm (floscan). His boat is identical to the v20 in length and weight.

For comparison my 200 Yamaha averaged 2.8 MPG @ 4000rpm .

I have a 1995 - 150 HP OceanRunner on my 21-V
gets me about 38 Knots according to my GPS..

don't know about fuel consumption - never measured it and am basically in denial on that $100 per tank subject anyway...

for the rest I do not know anything about it - which probably is a good sign about reliability .. have the Dealer do the scheduled 100 Hour interval maintenance jobs on it; for the rest just feed it oil and gas..

Thanks Chipde for your info on the Johnson Ocean Runner. *I understand that it is a very reliable Motor but like my Ford *it likes to drink gas. *I'm from Michigan and have no experience with motors deemed ocean, what makes them an ocean motor? *Thanks again, *Bill Mc

no idea why they picked the name OceanRunner...

oh, another thing I like about this motor is;
you do not need to run it or need earmuffs to flush the cooling circuit with fresh water -
you unscrew the little waterpump spray checker in back which unveils a connector to which you hook up the garden hose and you just run the water for a while to flush out the salty stuff...

I pretty sure Evinrude and Johnson started the "ocean runner " series in the mid 90's by pitching it as the only outboard that utilizes the most stainless steel parts (when compared to the competitors) for corrosion protection from saltwater as well as introducing the fresh water flushing attachment to flush out all the salt from the cooling jackets when the engine was not in use....... wanna see what saltwater can do to an inside of an outboard?? check out my photo album. ;)
