I'm wondering whether there is any value in having a speedometer??? I hear people say how inaccurate they are because of all the factors that can give a false reading.

I'm thinking about buying a handeld gps instead.

Anybody have any thoughts?

they can be helpfull in calculatingfuel use, if accurate. land speed 30 mph, water speed 35mph. makes a difference on how far you can go. but if ur not pushing ur limit on fuel, prob a waste of money if you got gps.

Go with the GPS!! Not only will it tell you your MPH , you will also be able to mark fishing holes and ports to find the fish and your way home, just incase!!
I used a Hand Held for years befor getting the plotter and was always great!!

My old pitot tube driven speedo wasn't very accurate. The new Yamaha came with a speedo built in, and it is much better -- of course it reads speed through the water vs GPS showing speed over the Earth.

Built-in speedo is nice to have, but not worth the trouble of buying and installing if you're using GPS, imo.

Go with a Garmin 76S, handheld with 2 AA battreries and your good to go. Fits in top pocket, and floats... Z

GPS all the way. My other one (speed through water) works but I rarely ever look at it unless theres alot of current and I'm not getting any bites at my current trolling speed. I alway vary trolling speed until I find whats working.

Speedometers are about as accurate as Willy's count on pain pills. ::)

Go with a GPS. ;)
