hey guys, my buddy has a 95 or 96 v21 with a 96 johnson ocean runner.
he says that he tops out at 4400 rpm. this does not sound right to me.
also says he thinks hes getting less than 35 mph.
says that hes buning a sh!tload of gas.
running out at about 4000 rpm.

WHAT GIVES?

what does he need to do?

being an I/O guy, the only thing i can think is he is an impropper propper.
any help will be passed along to him.

What's the hp of the Ocean Runner? *Sounds like prop, unless he's not running on all cylinders. If he can, let us know what pitch prop he's running. *

Like Seacrets, need to know HP...then need to know Max recommended RPMs by mfgr and a working tachometer...assumin' everything Ok w/ motor, he should be able to sustain mfgr's max rpms @ WOT...flat water, no wind, light load and trimmed up til she ''suckin' ducks!"...

Sounds like he's off on prop and probably needs something like a 3-blade 15 1/4'' dia. x 17 or 19 pitch...recommend SS...w/ mild cup...

Let us know ;) ...

I run a 150 hp with a 17" pitch prop. , 1.87:1 ratio and I turn 5500 RPM. *When we get his prop pitch and diameter we can solve this. He'll probably bun less fuel too. ;) *

Most with a 150 will hit 39 - 42 mph. I've got a 150 on mine also.

44.7 mph on gps with a 4 blade stainless. I could probably pickup 2-3 mph w/ three blade prop. 2000 Merc Saltwater running 5500 rpm.

well first, is this a new to him boat??

Has he run it before and got top RPM, 5000 to 5500 ?

Or is this a new to him boat and he has never run it before??

New to him then he needs to tune it and make sure that he is getting full throttle and if all that works then re prop, whats he got for a prop now??

If this is s boat that he has had for awhile and all was good before then he has to look deeper!

Need more info!! and maybe skools will see this and be able to help a little more.

MORE INFO!!

Just goin' on about pics, but they're always fun...

MJ makes a good point...if this boat new to him, it could be several different problems...do ya know if the motor's runnin' 100% ??...

If it was I amd its all new to him, I would make sure that the throttle is going full, Then change and gap the plugs, and while they are out do a compersion test.

What prop does he have?? Most run a 17 pitch X 14 1/2 or 15

Hows the carbs?? One or more can be flooding? Does it run smooth?

After he gets this stright he needs to change the lower unit oil and since he doesn't know, I would change the water pump also, Just so I do know when it was done last!!

I've got the same motor, a little older [1992],3 blade no frills stock aluminium 15 x 17. Max RPM is around 5300 at 38-40 MPH. Max rpm is 54-5500 according to the manual. The boat came w/ a 15 1/4 x 15 but I feel the 17 is better all around performance. anybody know the weight of the of the v21?.....Blue, you hearing me??

I think its the same or very close to the same weight of the V20. I seem to have mis-placed my spec sheet ::)

I have one tacked to my office wall (normally). Now where'd I put that thing ???

Dry weight on a 1996 w/150 outboard is 2750 lbs. With a 200 hp Merc it'll run just under 51 mph running a 14x 19" pitch prop. This was taken from the Wellcraft website.

Yeah Seacrets, I saw you had bases covered for hull + motor so I was trying to show hull weight minus motor since motor weights vary.

Anywhere from 350 to 600+. That's quite a spread.

sounds like the general concensus is change the prop.
i will suggest that to him and see where it takes him.

Have him check for any numbers stamped on the prop. If it's proped correctly he may not have to change it.
