Guys , the other day I bought a set of NGK spark plugs and installed’em on my 150 Ocean Runner, I adjusted the gap at .035 as recommended and went to the lake for a spin. The motor ran at the same top speed but it sounded a bit rough at idle.
With your vast experience with OB’s, what spark plug has performed best for you guys?
Thanks
Joe

It depends on the make of the engine is my opinion. JOHNNY-RUDES like there CHAMPIONS and your imports seem to run best on NGK's. MERCURY's are a toss up in my opinion.

Like Ferm, I always heard to stick with Champion in Johnson/Evinrude.

i hate Champion plugs, they break easy, & rust quickly, but I haven't seen a John-Rude yet that didn't run better with them than other brands. I run NGK on everything but John-Rudes

Bass, I've got the same motor and I have always used the Champions, always ran well, never felt the need to change. Plus it is what the factory manual recommends so I stayed with 'em.

every one has got high milage plugs out now, some of them are very expensive(opti plugs are $25+ each). All these plugs work great as long as the engine is in proper tune, gas foul a premium plug and you'll never get it to fire correctly again, some engineer earned his money making sure these plugs would foul under the wrong conditions. I still run regular plugs unless there is no alternate to the premium plug, I can buy 8 regular plugs for what soome premium plugs cost apiece

yeah but the standard plugs don't offer as good of fuel mileage as the high perf. ones do. Plus heat doesn't bother the high end plugs. I learned Platinum plugs and racing fuel don't match well. My old Camaro use to eat them a set every 1500 miles or so. I put the new Iridium Plugs in and never another plug issue. Had the same problem in my Corvette due to 90's Vette's run hot by design at around 230* so i had issues with standard and platinum plugs getting out of heat range but the Iridium plugs fixed the problem. GM told me to use them in the Vette and they were right.

Thanks guys
There was nothing wrong with the plugs I took out, I figured I'd change'em for the heck of it.
I'll put em back before going out again, just to prove a point.
Thanks again
Joe

Whatever plug you choose, go to Advance Auto to buy them, they carry a lot of marine plugs and charge car prices for em (ie: $1.50 a piece instead of $4.00 a piece at a boat dealer).....and if they don't have em, they will get them in 24 hrs or less.
