A friend of mine had them on his 23 footer, thy seemed fine, and he never backed up.

You have to watch any kind of tabs backing up but they are in the down position until you get up on plane and stay there until you throttle down. I never had any problems as I always go slow in reverse and never noticed any handling problems and they are not that big. I have large bennets on my big boat and sometimes forget that they are down and dont notice it until I throttle up. I would be more concerned about putting them on a hull powered by a jet drive outboard because if you stop in shallow water they will be on the bottom which is not good...Frank

Wow, good info on that link, for the first 1/4 of it. It turned into a bunch of guys arguing. Stupid. I don't think I'll visit that forum again.

I put them on my 79 V20. Best improvement I ever made to a boat. Every boat I will ever have will have them on it.
Unless you plan on backing up at full throttle they will never have a problem. They are mounted at 25 degrees, so that only sticks maybe 2 1/2 inches from transom bottom at full down.
Very easy to install.
