View Full Version : 95 MERCURY oil injection, keep it or ditch it?

I know this has been beat to death, but I'm beating myself up over the decision wether or not to remove the oil injection from my 95 150HP XRI engine that I just hung on my PROLINE flats boat. So what is the general consensus on MERCURY's V6 oil injection system? Good, bad or indifferent. I'm just about ready to dunk her, but have to decide wether or not to run the oil injection. I have it running right now, but haven't mounted the tank yet(just set it next to the boat and hooked it up with pre-mix in the tank).

And on a side note: Do you think a re-ring job will fix this one?

nope re-ring won't fix that and ditch the oil injection since mercury used a plastic gear to run the oil pump and the gears cracked and no alarm but they would slow the oiling and yeap look like your motor there.

Personal preference. *I've never had problems with my two Merc 150's (86 & 2000), but I guess others have. You may want to get more info from Mercury owners and their good or bad luck.

The pictures are the result of the previous owners 6000RPM+ pass running it at 100:1 pre-mix :o, not a pretty site. It actually looks better in the pictures than it really is. I've always had good luck with the MIKUNI oil injection pumps, but I have a bad gut feeling about the 2 piece plastic crank gear. I guess it decided, ditch the oil injection and run it 50:1 and live with some smoke ;D. On the bright side though, it had a full 3 gallon oil tank filled with QUIKSILVER oil when I bought the other boat for it's engine.

i;ve seen several break due to those plastic gears if you could find some bronze or brass gears then it would be great deal.

I just don't want to f-up my EFI engine. It's got 128lbs of compression across the board, and so far sounds EXCELLENT! But I haven't had a chance to run it on the water yet :(, but hopefully soon :-*.

if your fixing the boat up for resale, leave the oil injection on, if your keeping it for yourself, ditch it and premix. If you ever have to go into the engine( like your "rering job"), replace the gears with new one and put the oil injection back on

If resale, I agree, but just DON'T run it ... my friend's 200 fried when the plastic gear Skools mentioned went out ... his Merc Tec looked for metal replacement and could not find...my cut at auto-oilers is this; if it ain't under warranty, DISCONNECT it ... mixin's not bad at all w/ one of those mixin' bottles $3.99 at most dealers and I thinkl Wally-World has one ... ;) ...

This one is definately for me. This is my 18' PROLINE flats boat I bought a couple of weeks ago. I already have the MERCURY plug to block off the old pump hole, so it shouldn't be hard to remove it.

You guys can start anytime, but it's already gone ;D. I'm glad now I got it off of there to, the steel drive gear had some pretty significant wear on it for having been riding against a nylon gear. It had almost an 1/8th a turn of slack in it when I removed the pump.

Anybody want to add some oil injection to there MERC? Have a nice complete system.

I got about 3 hours on it now, but the oil injection is sitting on top of the tool box currently. It works good right where it is. My $3 mixing bottle method works very well currently, just a little smoke to keep the bugs off at slow speeds ;D.
