Who out there has ever messed with one of these Grand Wagoneers that had a Straight 6 in it? I bought a 1985 awhile back as my Project for $200 as a boat puller to leave at the coast. It actually has no rust and runs just not to good and has a straight 6 4.2 in it. The problem is the motor when it runs a for a few it starts to smoke oil heavy. Well i was going to rebuild it but my neighbors 1992 Jeep Cherokee caught fire under the hood but they got it out quickly. Motor still turns over and has great compression. But it's a Straight 6 4.0 HO. So i ask him what he wanted for it. He said give him a $100 and he'd be happy. Will this motor fit in the place of my 4.2 without any issues? I've just got to get a carb intake that will fit the 4.0 *is it right?

YOU GOTTA MATCH UP THE BELLHOUSING BOLT PATTERN - I THINK THE MOTOR IN THE WAGONEER IS AN OLD AMC DESIGN - YA NEED TO FIND A PARTS GUY WITH A GOOD ATTITUDE AND SOME TIME TO DO SOME RESEARCH - ALSO CK OUT SOME OF THE JEEP LINKS ON THE 'NET

I hope it works out well for you. Those old straight 6's are pulling machines, loads of torque! I had an old CJ-5 (wish I still had it) that, in low range, was a stump puller!

Skool, if the bell-housing matches, that's GREAT...Franco, what kinda computer/electronics issues is he gonna have squeezin' a '92 into an '85?...
I'd also be findin' out WHY that thang caught fire... ??? ;)...

IF IT BOLTS UP THATS GREAT, HE CAN GO TO THE LOCAL JEEP DEALER AND LOOK IN THEIR PERFORMANCE PARTS CATALOT OR A 4WD MAGAZINE, THEY MAKE A KIT THAT I THINK WILL WORK, IT ADAPTS THE OLD STYLE TO THE UPDATED FUEL INJECTION SYSTEM - MODERATLEY SIMPLE CONVERSION WITH THIS KIT. SKOOLS OUT IS A PRETTY SHARP GUY SO HE COULD DO IT EASILY.

Thanks Guys I'm not worried about the motor and trans matching though I'm using the complete motor trans and transfer case out of the 1992 it has a none computerized 4 speed auto so that way i get over drive too. But the changing a late model 4.0 to a carbed motor from injection so i don't need a computer is my area in question. It caught on fire in his drive way from the power steering pump locked up and broke open dumped the power steering fluid on the hot header which set her a blaze.

Skool, bet you gotta reason for goin' at it that way, but I'd be lookin' at windin' up w/fuel injection instead of carb...assumin' FI got torched, can't you go to junk-yard and get the FI unit offa one that flipped... :)...

here's pics of the Wagoneer Project
The rear bumper is off since i fixed the rear drivers quarter in the red primered area. Notice i've ripped out the interior and have checked the fit of a center console out of a 92 Jeep Cherokee.

There's an affluent seaside community up here called Duxbury. All the soccer moms used to drive them. We called the Deluxbury Cadillacs. They're also great beach sand sleds. Throw some rod racks on the front grill and lots of room in the back for all your gear and you're set for a nice surcasting outing. 8)

na haven't put the 4.0 in yet still stripping the 92 jeep. The Wagoneer still has the 4.2 in it. Runs but burns a ton of oil lol. I've still got to get the old wood grain off the side and then paint it white. It's a work in progress.
