This happened about 2 miles from where I keep the PD. *I was heading to the marina (by car) and turned on my handheld VHF in time to hear the wrapping up of the rescues. *By the time I got on scene the boat was pretty much the way you see her here.

Thank goodness for the locals that pulled them all from the water. *28 people on a 46 footer -- would it be rated to carry that many? *No word on whether it was a charter, but it sounds like it may have been.

My guess for maximum vehicle capacity would be approximately 14 persons. * Just a guess.

With twice that many on the way to a Weight Watchers meeting and all on one side of the hull to look at a dolphin and that spells big trouble.

Glad all made it home safely. *Captain is an idiot.

Strange, but no word yet on just who the owner or captain is. Follow up:

The investigation is continuing.

Thanks for the updates Pipe. I always wonder what the "conclusion" is to stories like that.

I never did hear what caused that brand new Carolina Classic to sink. Did anybody else?

i asked a cop i know at EI and she said it was a leaking thru hull fitting as she knew of. It was recovered next day.

1st, I think it's a miracle all were rescued w/ no deaths...unbelievable!!...very fortunate...

first story says people on convention decided to go on boating party...sounds like hired charter...last story(from owner) says he was taking "family and friends" (private cruise, no hire) to dinner...possible capt didn't have proper insurance in place for charter??...could be 1st story just wrong, but there's a fly doin' the backstroke in the ointment somewhere ::)...

and in the 3rd story, reporter says, "ran aground in mouth of creek in 60' of water"...I love reporters ;D ;D ;D

Thanks for the story, Pipe...hadn't heard about that one...I was showin' 57* water @ Shallotte Inlet in NC...sounds a little warmer down south, but still can't believe nobody inhaled when they hit 62* water @ HH....brrrr....
