talk about a dilema. i building a deck on a realy nice house on the beach in pass christian. i was just setting here going over some paperwork (aaaarrrrrggghhhh!!!!) when i realized i messed up the price on this project. at my square foot price for this type of deck i should have charged the guy $14806.04 with tax. instead, not syre how, i charged him $23592.60. the guy didnt bat an eye when i gave him the price. he is a very wealthy man (oil man) and this is just one of his vacation homes. he has already signed the contract, made the deposit, and the project is well underway. should finish by the end of the week.
i pride myself on being an honest man. and we all know what the honest thing to do here is. but, we're talkin $8788.56! for me, all for me! i mean, this guy flies into town on his private jet. his watch cost more than my house! he owns one of the, if not the largest oilfield services companies in louisiana. i mean, that little bit of change aint nothin to him. but to me, $8788.56 is a butt load of money.
but, right is right, and wrong is wrong. what do y'all think?

Show him all the material receipts, labor costs,
your profit margin and negotiate.

He may at least cover all the material and labor costs.
If he is an honest person, then he will realize your error and still pay the full amount.

Be up front with the guy, I am sure he has been ripped off in the past and
if you are honest with him, he will most likely appreciate the effort.

rich or poor he deserves the same consideration you would show someone who is not wealthy.

morality does not have an accountant.

do the right thing.

Did you quote him the $23K price before you began work? And he signed a contract for that price?

RACER:

DO THE RIGTH THING, TAKE THE $9,000.00 AND DIVIDED IN TWO ($4,500.00) AND GIVE HIM THAT FOR CREDIT.

I read your post wrong, I thought you under charged.

Anyway, be honest and give him a refund.
Even in our business, we deal with the big three and the big truck makers.

If we overquote tooling and assembly lines,
we only charge the customer for the amount that we used.
If we under quote, we try to negotiate, but sometimes we have to eat the overages.

GIVE HIM 50% OF THE AMOUNT YOU OVERCHARGED HIM,
THAT'LL COVER UP FOR THE TIMES YOU UNDERQUOTE PEOPLE AND HAVE A TO EAT IT.

Keep the money and tell him how bad he screwed up and you dont care. That way we dont have to worry about you buying a new boat and leaving V20.com with all that new honest bussiness.

Truthfully, Look in the mirror and think how you would like to be treated.

Give him half the money back and tell him you made a donation to the "Turbinedoctor repower project" in his name.

aw man, i was hoping this would go the other way, lol. i know i gotta be straight with the dude. but, seeing as he agreed to the price. we had a deal for me to build the deck at the price. i was hoping you guys would do a realy good job of talking me into keeping the money so i could repower and not feel like crap about it!

oh, and stink, thats not what i make. thats what i charge!bout 2 grand of that is sales tax. 40 percent is materials. vehicle maintnence, fuel, insurance, uncle sam, so on, so on... i know thier are a few builders here. this is a trex deck, clipped not screwed, framed with x10's and x8 joist on 16 inch centers. 6x6 post and, oh yeah, she's 14 feet off the ground! with 1 $17 an hour hand and 1 $10 an hour laborer i'm building this deck for $16.50 a square foot. $13 per linear foot for hand rail. would someone please tell stink why i aint rich!

Not rich, not poor, just well off and comfortable at those prices.
Owning an older home, I have gotten many a quote on repairs and remodeling.
After the wife sees the quote, she agrees to let me do the work (because I can),
but it takes me a long time because of regular job interuptions, like business trips.
Doing the work myself saves the labor charges, but materials will kill ya.
So far, I have found that cement work supplies, seams to be the most reasonably priced.
My dad worked in construction and taught me a lot.
I went to school to become an electrician, but never followed through.

well, the guy asked me how much i would build the deck for and i told him. this is the price we agreed on. everybody always says how that if they found a sack of money on side the rode they would turn it in. well, its a different story when you got a sack of money in ur hands.
i did a fence for a fema trailer park few months back. i was a sub. when i was finished i was told that i would have to wait 30 days for my money. not what contract says but, what could i do? 30 days i found out that the contractor had screwed everything up. none of his pipe passed the tv test. he had already been paid by the government and split town. i never got a dime. 48g's i was owed. 24 of em out my own pocket for materials. i mean i had every dime i had, plus 2g's i borrowed from my mom tied up in that job.
i aint ever been a thief or a lier (bullsh!tting dont count) and i have always done what i think is right whether it cost me financialy or it landed me in jail. only consolation is the phrase 'what goes around, comes around'. well, ya know what? I'M DUE!
