View Full Version : Secret Project

A while back I alluded to a "secret project". Some of you might remember me losing my USB cable for my camera. Well, during spring cleaning the cable decided to show up, so I'm back in business with my pics!

So, here's my project. I've got about 20 bucks total in it so far.

Dry-stacked concrete block.
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d73/stinkery/S2010126-1.jpg?t=1174329394
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d73/stinkery/S2010127.jpg?t=1174329413
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d73/stinkery/S2010128.jpg?t=1174329433

Heavy duty angle iron lintel. I painted only the part that shows on the outside. I did not use high heat paint and didn't want paint fumes in there with the food.
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d73/stinkery/S2010129.jpg?t=1174329459
My dad made this grilltop for me out of bar stock and expanded metal.
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d73/stinkery/S2010132.jpg?t=1174329482
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d73/stinkery/S2010130.jpg?t=1174329501
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d73/stinkery/S2010131.jpg?t=1174329562
Here it is all put together. Since these pics were taken I added a sheet of plywood to the top with handles and a thermometer to hold heat in and keep water out. Long term I plan on building a hood with a door on it out of stainless steel to cover the grill.
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d73/stinkery/S2010133.jpg?t=1174329591
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d73/stinkery/S2010134.jpg?t=1174329616
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d73/stinkery/S2010135.jpg?t=1174329633

So far I've cooked a full rack of spareribs, a couple of racks of babyback ribs, some split chicken breasts, a wild boar tenderloin, and a couple of deer hams.

Also not pictured (yet) is the burndown barrel my dad made me. Its the standard 55 gallon drum with the shovel hole in the bottom. Dad made a removeable grate that sits just above the door to let the coals drop through. Works great! I will get some pics.

Well, there you have it. A poor man's grill. :)

Sounds like it's almost time for a group hodown at the Blue's, I'll bring the drunken chicken and utensils, and a bottle of Jack, you supply the super models and wood (for the fire perverts) and a few chairs. Wind Talker can bring some lobster and clams, Franco can bring mahi mahi or dolphin steaks, Ozzie can bring some striper fillets. Air skools and Pipe can bring some munchies and beer.
Stinky can come and entertain us ;D

Don't forget Bassarama and his bluefish patee or however you spell it LOL.

He is my inspiration! Oh and special thanks to Stinky for making me want to KILL everything that walks just so I can eat it ;D

I would have mortared everything together but this location is exactly where my future boat shed (see other post in general section) will be one day.

Hardwood coals RAP. Hickory or oak. Either will work equally as well. I've got a burn-down barrell. Or some people just say burn barrell, that I use to burn down the hardwood coals. Once you get her to 200 degrees she holds heat really well. I mean I'm able to drink like 3 beers before I have to shovel more hot coals ;)

I like to cook at about 180 - 200 degrees nice and s - l - o - w and steady!

I promise to get pics of my custom burn down barrell! (55 gallon drum)

you'd be suprised how little he had in the car-b-que. When he got the car he was going to race it, but a back injury sidelined that idea, while he was recovering, he got the idea. His neighbor was a welder and did most of the fabrication. there were enough good parts on the car to offset the cost of much of it. I gave him something fun to do while he was recovering form his back problem. He used to compete in cook offs with the car-b-que, these pictures were during Mayberry Days in Mt. Airey, NC. He got beat out in best of show by someone with flying pigs in their display

on the topic of good pig, any of ya'll ever stopped in at the Georgia Pig, exit 29 off of I95, best tomato based sauce I've ever tried. Scared of the ribs, I'm allways by myself when I stop, if I ever started on the ribs, I'd have to get soemone to drive the rest of the way. that tea has that sulfur water taste, got to get used to it.

Kidding apart, you got yourself a nice bbq pit/smoker, you can do a whole howwwg there, perfect for a big V20 club get-together party ;) ;D

Last fall I’ve acquired a water tank from a cement truck (connections, connections) , this thing is made of 3/16” metal and measures 30” D X 7’ long, I plan on cutting 2’ off the length and build a smoker on wheels. I just need to find time ...
