Pretty cool.

First off, let me say I'm a big Etec fan. I think they have the potential to be the best outboards out there..only time will tell. 8)
BUT, I don't understand why in all the head to head tests they compare them to four strokes. :-/ Yes, they have fuel economy comparable to that of a four stroke and thats wonderful, but that should be where the comparisons to four strokes ends. You cant expect a four stroke Yammie, Honda, or Merc Verado to hang with the torque of an older 2 stroker, let alone a new top of the line model. The top speed, torque, and hole shots should be compared to the new TWO stroke models. ::)
All that being said...it was still cool to watch. 8)

seen that one before, it is just a shame they had to waste a perfectly good yammy... :P >:(

I think that's the dumbest waste of time (and a perfectly good engine) I've ever seen. Did those guys really think that the 4-stroke would be an even match? Even guys that own and love their 4-strokes would know better. sheeesh . . . >:(

Pipe...I reely like the e-tecs...but my bet is, it wouldn't pull YOUR Yam 200 under ;) ... 4 stroke to 2 stroke comparison is apples and oranges...

ok,
now I am no OB guy, but is a 2-stroke stronger than a 4-stroke? ???

WHY???

All else being equal a two stroke is about 50% more powerful than a four of the same displacement. The disadvantage of a two is they dont last as long. they run harder, hence shorter lifespan.
This is why a four stroke outboard is so much heavier. They have to displace more cc's in order to produce the same power as a two stroke rated at the same HP.

I think they sell the fact that they can get gas mileage, lighter weight, low noise just like the 4 stroke but with the power of a 2 stroke and thats why they test against them. Not sure why they had to pull the boat until it sank. They proved their point way before that happened.

You are probably right. I bet that's the reason they try to push it against the four stroke market so hard. still its like comparing apples and oranges ya know?

Think of it this way. A diehard 2 stroke guy isn't going to buy a 4 stroke, so they don't need to prove that they are better than a 2 stroker. But the 4 stroke fan is leary of buying a 2 stroker, this is who they are targetting. There trying to make people question the 4 strokers power and benefits over a 2 stroker to sway them to buy there 2 stoke E-TEC. And in doing so they are running enough commercials to let the diehard 2 stroke fans know there building a 2 stroker, while at the same time trying to sway people from buying a 4 stroke. It is all a matter of marketing is all.

That would be the thinking Ferm, well put.
I had the oppurtunity to buy an aluminum boat with the Etec and one with the Yamaha 4stroker on it. I went with the boat with the Yammie for a couple of reasons. Mostly the boat itself was more in line with what I wanted.
I think that is what will determine which sells more for a lot, what engine the boat company installs on their boats.
But I think after talking with fellows that own and run both that in the long run the 4strokes will end up being the preferred for the same reasons that it happened with motorcycles. I had both and there wasn't a comparison in the long haul. I have friends now that have over 100 thousand miles on the 80's Kawasakis etc. And the guys with the older BMW's are still running original engines from the 60's and 70's and will be running when I am in the ground.
The two strokes make power on each stroke and are lighter and less complicated, at least they were, nowadays to compete with the four's that has changed a bunch.
So Stinky you are right in one way, a fair comparison would be to run it against a Merc Opti-Max. You would have seen two engines running until the rope or cleats broke. And fuel economy wise the Merc is supposed to be better, but I still love the look of the Etec.
My motor arrived yesterday for my G3 and I was there when they mounted it and hooked it all up. First turn of the key vroom, and just like its automotive brethren it purred almost silently, and I have very little doubt that that little 60hp Yamaha 4stroke will outlive my ability to run a boat on the water.
Blondes, brunettes or red heads, something for everybody, as Jimmy Stewart would tell you "it's a wonderfull life"

I have a Yamaha 4 stroke 150 on my boat. It's quiet, efficent with fuel, runs as fast as I want to go. I never figured out what the hole shot concern is all about, mine is no rocket out of the hole, but thats only 10 seconds of my entire run. Ask Reel or Willy about fuel economy!

It did seem to make that gas Franco, I think my little 60 HP will do the same, should be picking it up tommorow.

Another vote for the Yammy fours making gas here!!! I got a buddy running a 115 and when he first got it he ran ALL OVER Mobile bay one day and burned 12 gallons. I would have used a full tank making the mileage he did that day. :P

Four strokes last longer then 2 stroke??
I see 20 year old 2 stroke still going and with little maintains!!
4 stroke is just a baby right now and we have no 20+ year models to go by? and what is the maintains and repair costs of 4 strokes??
I will keep running 2 stroke till I die, cause I know they will still be ruining!
