Grant funds fishing classes for students
Middle school students will be catching striper's during gym class starting next year.
Bourne Middle School received a $3,000 grant from the Future Fishermen of America to implement fishing as part of the physical education curriculum, according to Bourne Middle School gym teacher Andy Mather.
The money will go toward purchasing fishing equipment for students who will head to the Cape Cod Canal during gym class in order to learn to fish.
The decision is part of a trend to move away from traditional activities such as dodge ball, to recreational choices that can be continued even outside the classroom, Mather said.
The new program will start in September.
