I work on a dairy farm as a milker and I cannot imagine even going near the manure pit without any protective breathing apparatus. Here in New Engalnd in the winter it gets below zero at times and the pit never freezes. You can stand and watch the gasses bubbling up. We had a springer calf fall in once only up to her belly and by the time we got to her she had already died from the methane gasses. Some nasty "schit" for sure and those poor folks who died, especially the kids. My heart goes out to them. :'(
