Ok all you Transom plywood guys...Question:
I was told today that marine plywood is going for $180.00 a sheet. There is no way in hell I'm paying that much for wood in the transom. Cant I go with an exterior 7 ply type of plywood wood ???
It will be covered in glass, so it shouldnt rot.
Would like input on this.
I wanna redo the transom, soda blast the bottom and bottom coat it, patch some screw holes here and then and put her onE-Bay and let somebody else finish her up. If it dont sell, she still gets parted out. I just wanna see if I can actually rebuild a transom and then be called Lord Hammer... you know like Lord Skool. ;D

Exterior 3/4"is good. 3/4" inch Birch or Oak is better.

buy the 13 layer birch plywood from Lowes it's $36 a sheet in 3/4 and it will take 3 layers of wood epoxied together into 1 solid piece and then install by the way make that transom 25" while you are doing the new one.

Thats the news I wanted to hear. *;) I will get get the 36 bucks plywood. *;)
Transom is only 1 1/2 wide I measured. Shouldnt I only use two 3/4 " pieces ? ??? ???

My 21 project was 3 layers of 3/4 and so was my V20 when i redid it. I'll post pics as soon as my Skool's account is backand the repairs section is back i have all the holes sanded and the holes then filled over with resin and micron balloons

Yeah, would love to see those Pics. Three pieces would give you a 2 1/2 transon. Figure that would be to thick.
Then your steering control arm would hit the transom, Like Randlemans did. Any pics. would be a great help.
Thanks. ;)

no it won't hit rands only hit because he put a 20" motor on the boat but when you build the transom to 25" problem solved. the transom is 3" thick total with glass

LOL, Tuna, Glad the guys at work are finding some enjoyment. ;D ;D ;D ;D
SKOOL, my total measurement from skin to skin was only 2 1/4. Did you have to cut the stringers back at all.

Hey SKOOL, your resin and micro ballons, will that bond over West System ??? ??? ???
When I redo the seems where I cut out the transom, I'll lay in some cloth mixed with west system, but the finish top coat, I thought about using teh same stuff. Buddy gave me a 5 gallon bucket of it to use if I want to.
Only problem is, he says the stuff is super strong and you should only use a few drops of the hardner when mixing. Is that true ??, Dont wanna get jammed up not using the correct amount of hardner, unlike using bonda, you mix the hadner to get an even color, where there isnt a color change with resin and the micro balloons. Request input on this. ;)

i don't use West for anything crap to me, some like it but get resin from a boat builder and use it to lay up your repairs and then mix some and then add micro balloons to the mixed resin till the mix is like peanut butter. Mix you some resin up and add hardner as a test in a cup see how it sets up i always add little more than they say so it will set up but if you buy boat builders resin it will set up without hardner over time so it has to be used in a few months or it will be hard i store my resins in a refrigerator in my shop i only use for beer and resin ;D
