Well guys, I promised I would knock out the transom today. Well, remember I worked all night and just got home. So I did the best I could for being up for over 24 hours. I started off the day removing some more decals.

http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f153/msbhammer/DSC02772.jpg

I then started removing the rub rail.

http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f153/msbhammer/DSC02773.jpg

Well after staring at the transom that seemed like a life time, I finally picked a spot, marked it out and started cutting.

http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f153/msbhammer/DSC02774.jpg

Splash well removed.

rotted wood. :-/

Splash well.

Inner skin grinded out along the edges and removed.

http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f153/msbhammer/DSC02780.jpg

Was disapointed to see that Wellcraft pieced in the transom with several pieces. I'm hoping to insert full pieces for strenght. Is this what everyone does ??

Running out of steam and the beer was getting warm. Tried getting all the wood out, decided I would do the rest another day.

Good first day Mike 8) As far as the transom in three pieces I think this is how they compensated for the curve. I'm not sure of the best way to match the curve of the transom. My plan was to epoxy (3) 1/2 inch sheets of plywood individually to the transom skin and pull it tight with screws and wood washers, then do the next 2 layers the same way till I got my 1 1/2. I figure thats the best way to get the curve. Then again I never did a boat transom before and my project V went to the crusher so take my advice lightly ::)

msbhammer
08-01-2007, 11:59 PM
Mulv. Thats what I planned on doing as well, except I thought about running or cutting grooves into the plywood so it would bend easier. Plus toss in some filler to help fill the voids when bending her in shape.

Thanks for the Feed back. *;)

Hammer, I am thoroughly impressed...out there bustin' tail on a boat that ain't your main squeeze and here it is 90 outside and humid as hell ;D

Keep up the good work and hey, nice pix ;D

Thanks guys. It was a killer today with the heat. And doing this by myself made me think twice about everything. Now lets see if I can put it back together. *:-/ * * ;)

I remember seeing Stink with the chain saw. I guess he was going to pour in Seacast ??? ???
I was about to do the same, but the cost was alot, plus I had concerns about raising it to a 25: transom and coming up with a way to make a false skin for it to bond to.

You've inspired me! Wifey says she'll kill me but, I think I'm going to unbarry the v I found and redo her over the next 28 years till retirment.

Airslot
08-02-2007, 09:20 AM
Hammer, I wouldn't cut grooves. The plywood will bend find to the curve of the transom. Cutting grooves isn't needed and you'll never get it filled evenly. Just seems like extra work with no chance of being stronger, but a slight chance of being weaker?

Now I know who to get when mine needs a transom repair. ;) ;) ;) ;) ;D ;D

Good job HAMMER, I can't wait till my doctor totally releases me from my neck surgery,
Then I can get back to donig heavy work and not just this puttering sh!t.

I am hoping that a few things come together for me as planned,
and if they do, I will be using seacast.

msbhammer
08-02-2007, 12:05 PM
Parishht, I think Stink was gonna use Seacast, since he was sawing out the transom. I think its good stuff, I didnt use it because I had concerns about its strenght above the outter skin since I was raising the transom 5".
I dont know how SKOOL does it. Its for sure a two man job pulling out the splash well.

msbhammer
08-02-2007, 12:48 PM
Chesapeak: I wanna see Picks of that project V. Sounds scary and exciting. *;D ;D ;D
Thanks AIR and CY. Going out to Home Dpot to look at the wod that SKOOL said to get. Maybe go with 3/4 or with 1/2 as Mulv stated. Not sure just yet.

Today I gotta get the rest of the rotted would out and start grinding away at the fiberglass as to where i will be reglassing and patching

I plan on screwing each piece, but should I use just good deck treated screws or should I use stainless. *???

I'm home. *;D ichy as hell to. :-/
Didnt get as much as I wanted to get done today. The heat was kicking my a$$ and geting the plywood off the transom was a pain. DOnt know how SKOOL does it, power chissel *??? ??? ???. I had putty knives, hammer, pry bar along with my $" grinder, trying to get every bit of wood off the transom. But I finally got it done. ;D

Still have alot more prep work to do, before putting in the wood. Want to get all the grinding out of teh way once and for all. The weekend is suposed to be super hot as well. *:-/

I don't know if Stinks tank will fit in a 78 ??? Thats the first shot I have seen of the entire floor and I can see that the hatch over the gas tank is a lot smaller than the cover on my 79. Stinks project was a 79 also.

msbhammer
08-03-2007, 05:50 PM
Really ??, That tank cover I thought was really long. Compared to what my 86 V has.

parishht
08-03-2007, 05:55 PM
The tank fits only under half the cover.
The front half is open space,
that is going to be MY new anchor storage when I am done.
The tank continues back past the end of the cover and reaches to
the two floor openings at the rear.

I have a picture, but it is on my other computer,
if I get a chance, I will post it tonight.

Mulv80
08-03-2007, 05:58 PM
My cover runs the full length and width of the tank. I can't imagine trying to dig the foam out around a tank thats covered half way by the floor. I guess you have to cut the floor ??? I have removed 2 tanks from V-20's and its a tough job even with full access to the tank.

msbhammer

I'm presuming this tank is waisted. havent removed teh tank cover yet.

the cover is off right now,
I have it here at home making repairs.

Just tell the office I gave you permission to visit site 816A.

08-03-2007, 07:35 PM
Thanks Parishht. Guess I found myself a new fuel tank. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
I'm still uncertain what to do with this V. :-/
With my luck if I dont part it out and stick it on E-Bay with a new Transom, nobody might not buy it.
Wanna make a few bucks to pay for the other other custom dive platform on my V.
It might be parted out next week or have a new transom in it. I just dont know. :-/ :-/ :-/ :-/

West isn't the only epoxy, check and see what the boatyard is using for epoxy? They may be using all poly though?

Either way, keep up the good work. You have to finish now, cause I wanna see how you piece the splashwell back in ;D

msbhammer
08-04-2007, 09:41 AM
The guys have a 50 gallon drum of West System. Hmm.
Walked into the bait shop this morning and seen the going prices of West System. *:-/ Trying to make this as much as a free V as possible. *;D

Dredding the splashwell. Gonna have to do some fine work to hide the seem. That might mean painting the whole boat. Allgrip is big time pricey as well. :o

08-04-2007, 10:44 AM
Hammer, West is OK but there are better epoxys out there for 1/2 to 2/3 the price. Give me your email address and I will hook you up with a better "no blush" epoxy for about $50 delivered to your house.

But then again, I just came home for dinner and seen the bills. After seeing teh bills, I still might just part it out. Plus seeing that dually on E-Bay for 500 bucks and nobody bought yet. I might just get stuck with this after I redo the transom.

With a new transom and a decent trailer she will sell. The only problem you may have is in our part of the country boat buying season is winding down. Put that boat on the "Bassbarn" for $1000 with a new transom and trailer and she will definetly sell.

You are an animal my friend. I am blown away by your work so far.

I just managed to make it home and cool down in the shower. This is a bad heat wave we are in. Hope to have more done next week. Still hoping to get some free resin. Hammer,

This is my first run in with this thread. I've been away for a few weeks, so when I first saw this I thought it was your original V you were working on.

Wow! Looks really good so far. Keep her going; it won't be long now.

I'm really proud of ya' man.

Hey, don't let that dually on Ebay get to you. As I said in another post, many people wait to the last seconds before bidding on things. Ebay is hardly the thing to look to for determining what your boat might be worth. Do a good job, as I know you will, and you may be surprised.

Mulv80
08-08-2007, 06:38 PM
looks good Mike 8) How are the stringers where they meet the transom. I know my project was rotted the first 2 feet of the stringers because Wellcraft failed to seal that drain hole. Not to add more work to your plate but you have enough access to them to make an easy repair if they need it. Just my .02.

I always wondered how important the wood in the stringers are to this hull. I know with other makes the fiberglass is where the strength is. We have discussed this before on the board, but I don'y think we ever came to a conclussion ???

msbhammer
08-08-2007, 07:21 PM

Mulv, I was really surpised how solid the stringers were. One stringer had about 3/4" of rotted would that I cleaned out and will fill with resin.
Somebody by that dually and donate the bracket. LOL. ;D ;D ;D ;D

Hopefully the bonding to the outer skin will go good.
Guessing wetting down both pieces, but then adding some filler as well to fill any voids. Then screwing teh hell out of it from the outside to pull it all tight.
Sound right. ???

08-08-2007, 07:28 PM
Looking at that last Pic. Mulv. This year V or any other I guess could sure one more stringer on either side..
Once I get the cap on, I;m not gonna glass it to the floor just yet. Wanna decide how I will replace a 2x2 soft spot
I think SKOOL is beefing up his floor with3/4 and my be adding more support as well.

Mike I'm sorry it took so long. Been crazy with this heat wave and a lot of catching up to do after being off for three weeks. Not to mention it was nice to have a few days off with just wifey and me. With that said here's the eye candy.
Not sure of the year but it's free and in real rough shape. About the only thing not damaged or rotten are the slider and the windshield. Not sure of the year, like I said it still has the plastic molded logo and V20.

Lots of work, more then my knowledge not to mention wifey gave me the big HE*& NO last night. ;D the one pic is of a gash in the side wall and that rear end is shot. No worries, with the heat wave and drought here, I've seen another that was covered in cuzu. Now that the vines are dieing off, I'm going to take a look and offer to just pull it out for the guy. Ok, it rained last night and was hot as hell today again, but I had the V tarped up so I could do some work on her. Had some spare West System so I went animal on the transom. ;D
I had a cure time of working of 20 minutes. Well after 10 minutes she was heating up quick. I was against clock here big time. :-/

http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f153/msbhammer/DSC02807.jpg

Soaked the inside of the skin and the transom wood up really well. Because I was working so fast and by myself, I didnt realize I screwed up. When I knocked in some supports, the transom wood raise up about 1/2 from the bottom. :-/ Said hell with it and screwed the hell out of her from the outside.

Ran out to the store to buy some more. *:-/ *:'( :'(
It wasnt free. Those microfibers is some super strong stuff. Like concrete when it dries.
http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f153/msbhammer/DSC02809.jpg

Grinded down the screws and went ahead and wetted down the inside. Had concerns about the wood asorbing when I add in the second transom piece. Figured this might prevent any non bonding and seperation. Yes, I did...I cit slices down her to get the bend. Thickness of one ply, then I tossed on a few batteries to bend her overnight. I'm gonna fill in the cuts with filler.

When I stick in the second piece, should I secure it from the inside ??? ??? Screw the second piece into the first piece ??? ??? or it really doesnt matter ??? ???

Anyone ever use West system for bonding wood. I used it with cloth and had no problems, just a bit skepical on how strong it really is when it comes to bonding wood to teh fiberglass skin.

Airslot

Might it be appropriate to put a layer of 6oz cloth between the plywood sheets? THat's what I had in mind, but I'm certainly no expert...

msbhammer

When I fixed the hole in my boat for the bracket I put cloth between the two pieces of ply. But like air I am no excpert either. But it is solid as a rock!!

I also used some screws to hold all toghter, after it was dry I took them out, did not want anything to rust in there.

You are doing a good job for a first timer!!

Skools_Dual
08-11-2007, 02:10 AM
you don't want to leave those screws in the transom and you should have placed a layer of glass between the wood. then once it dried ground the glass to be rough and wet out then wet outthe second layer of wood then clamped in the second layer. then glass it in with 2 to 3 layers of glass

msbhammer
08-11-2007, 02:31 AM
Thanks MJ and SKOOL, so I guess I will add in a sheet of cloth, let dry..grind..wet down along with second piece of wood and then clamp down...correct. ??? ;)

Need more West System. Gonna go beg at the boat yard in the morning.

Skools_Dual
08-11-2007, 02:34 AM
to late to glass now cause youhave resined now just grind the resin you put on the first layer to rough up wet out and wet out the second layer and clamp on without glass between.

msbhammer
08-11-2007, 02:36 AM
Good to know this. I didnt think I needed cloth between the wood, as if how frayed was bonding in the wood to his skin of his fuel tank cover.
SKOOL, ship me some resin brother. ;)

Airslot
08-11-2007, 09:22 AM
Skools, correct me if I'm wrong, but the ideal method would go something like this...using slow cure hardener:

1. Scuff the inside of the outer skin.

2. Wet out a layer of cloth
3. Sheet of ply
4. Layer of Cloth
5. Second sheet of ply
6. Clamp the hell out of it ;D

Steps 2-6 could all be done in one shot to make for the best bond.

7. Scuff the last sheet of ply and lay up 3 layers of glass for the inner skin.

8. Have a frosty

msbhammer
08-11-2007, 01:43 PM
I'm at a loss now. Off to the scrapper. :-/

Airslot
08-11-2007, 01:54 PM
NO loss Hammer....scuff the heck out of what you layed up yesterday, smear a mess of resin on there and go at it ;D You'll have a good bond, then glass it all in when done. It's not gonna come out of there in your lifetime ;D

Airslot
08-11-2007, 01:55 PM
Look at it like this....your making a 1.5" sheet of ply....and I gaurantee that the west epoxy bonds better than whatever glue they use to make the ply.... ;)

macojoe
08-11-2007, 01:56 PM
Just scuff it all up good!! wet it add cloth and next piece of ply, clamp or screw toghter!

Will never come apart in the next 10 years and it won't be yours!!

Remeber to take out the screws!!

Skools_Dual
08-11-2007, 06:27 PM
right on Air except you don't need a layer of cloth between the outer skin and the wood. best is to do as i did for my Sea Ox i called boat manufactors asking where they buy their transom wood cause todays boats are built with 1 layer of ply wood that's 2 in thick. i bought a 40 layer 2" thick 5 x 10 sheet from a place in Greensboro NC for $98 and cut my own transom. this is where Parker and Grady buy their transoms. Itis kill dried treated. If you can buy treated that was killed afterwards it is best but higher.

Skools_Dual
08-11-2007, 06:29 PM
oh and yeah Air the slower your resin sets up the better.

Hammer don't glue the camera to your hand or transom lol

msbhammer
08-11-2007, 11:36 PM
Cloth, no cloth, cloth, no cloth. AHHHHH :-X :-X :-X
Well I sanded down the inner wood today as you guys suggested and went to town. I did wet down two scrap pieces of wood last night and they were bonded for life. Made me wonder if I realy needed cloth or not between the wood. Well I went ahead and added in a shet of cloth. With the cooler temps, it seemed that I had some longer working time. Smoking crack still helped though. :-X and I worked quick.

Hammer, i painted the deck after my re-do. *The first time I used boat paint from Petitt and was unhappy with the results. *them the next time i used porch paint by glidden and it has held up great,i also added non skid to it.
On the stringer drains, i enlarged the holes a little and stuck a piece of 3/4 PVC through and let it stick out about an inch on both sides. *I then glassed around the pipe. After it cured, I cut the PVC flush with the sides of the stringers. No water intrusion forever

4" grinder will fix the problem along with some bondo I hope. Thought about using a thinner/lighter cloth, but didnt want to loose any strenght. Hope to have her cleaned up a bit more this week.

My buddy just pulled a motor today. Guy blew it up and went with a new E-Tec. The boat has 60 gallons of 50/1 fuel that needs pumped out. It's for free, so I might be pumping out fuel for teh next day or so. ;D

just needed a old coffee can to roll on it to get smooth and don't add to much cloth to thick or you will make the transom to heavy.

It works awesome and pumps 5 gallons of gas in less than a minute.

Hey HAMMY, I stopped over on Sunday and took a good look at your work,
really looks good.

What I really wanted to see was how much room there
is to replace what should be scuppers.
From what I see, to do mine, I would have to have rubber arms to
get up inside.

Parishht, I agree. not happy with the drain set up. Like you said, you gotta have rubber arms to get inside to replace teh hose. really no good places either to install access hatches either.
Going down today for more sanding before the cap goes on. I'll get up with Jim about your buddy's Rudey motor. ;)

Hammer,

Seacast seems to elicit negative feelings from folks. Pourable is better terminology. I will probably redo my transom on my dually this winter and I think a pourable solution is in the cards. I personally will go with Arjay or Nidacore pourable- Seacast is just to damn expensive. I'm sure I'll have my share of folks telling me I'm crazy for using the stuff. If it flops, it flops. I can always go back in and do a traditional rebuild.

Arjay and Nidacore (Nidabond pourable) are both ceramic polyester compounds, as opposed to Seacast which used fiberglass. Both are about half the cost of Seacast which makes them very attractive. Nidabond has been used by Wellcraft and Venture Marine for some time now. I think they area viable option if they are done correctly, and the key word there is "correctly".

From their websites:
Description: ARJAY formulates its Ceramic Pourable Compound with premium polyester resins and high strength ceramic spheres resulting in high tensile and flexural strength. This lightweight compound is ideal for filling large volumes where strength and rigidity are major concerns. The Ceramic Pourable Compound mixes and pours easily from the 5-gallon pail.

Features:
Excellent rigidity and strength
Formulated with premium resins
Low exotherm
Mixes easily
Pumpable or pourable
Excellent stability

Uses:
Filling large volumes
General purpose filler
Radius compound
Structural applications where high compressive strength is required

and:

NIDA-BOND POURABLE TRANSOM COMPOUND is ceramic filled polyester exhibiting exceptional physical properties. In particular, the compressive strength has been documented by an independent testing laboratory to be 3,895 psi (ASTM 695). This is several times that of plywood and 8 to 10 times that of PVC foam. In addition, the failure mode shows elastic yielding before failure. This makes the NIDA-BOND POURABLE TRANSOM COMPOUND material an excellent choice for critical applications such as coring transoms on power boat hulls.
