headed way out to the Eastern end of Long Island yesterday to join TheTinMan in our first,[early], fall bass trip. We were drifting eels in the rips off an area called Hortons Point. On the water at 3pm, last 3hrs. of the flood. Sort of a wind against tide thing going on.... managed a few run-offs, no hook-ups. Tide slacked and turned quickly around.Wind was light and now going w/ the tide. TinMan has many run-offs,and lost what appeared to be a nice fish. Phester has nada. Tin brings up a 38' 20something pounder, nice fish. Then Tin brings up a small porgy.Tide picks up, I've got a nice eel and 10 ounces of lead and send him to the bottom. We're in this about four and a half hours and Phester needs a fish.BAD. Finally I hook up, nice fight, only two runs, but pulled like a freight train. Tin gets him in the net. I take out my K-mart digital scale/tape measure......solid 42" and 29.85 lbs. Not a trophy, but a nice way to start the fall season

randle, yes I am the king of slackers when it comes to posting pics......TinMan has got three pics in his camera[I didn't have mine w/ me]. I'll see if he'll post them up for me. Forgot to mention that Tin also caught a decent bluefish.....we were calling his catch "a Hortons Point grand slam".....a bass, a blue, and the porgy. And yes Chum, I will tell Tin that you [and Willy] were asking for him. He'll often ask me how you are doing.

my "canned" response to that, Bass, is TheTinMan is just old and crusty, and sometimes prefers to be a hermit.....but he will always go fishing. We [myself and another friend] gave it a shot last evening/night. Anchored up w/ bunker chunks and fish finder rigs in one of our favorite, rocky bass locations. Conditions were there....a little drop in temp, outgoing tide, a bit overcast sky and loosing daylight.....at least it looked fishy :-/, Nothing to show for it but some pretty big sand sharks/dogfish.

I missed about 10 runoffs that night!!! >:( I boated only 1 fish, 38". batting .100 really sux!
Anyone using Gamigatsu (sp?) "Octopus hooks"? Not the "Octopus Circle hooks". The offset is less on the non-circle hooks. I was trying the "no Set" method as in using circle hooks, tried the "set" method as in regular hooks. I've had pretty good luck with circle hooks in the past. It is tough to get in the habit of NOT setting the hook and just reeling. Circles do result in nice hook sets, always hooks em right in the corner of the mouth.
I was letting the fish run for several seconds but kept missing them. Oh well, can't really complain. Last 2 trips I've boated 4 Bass from 36" to 42" (phesters).

Missing all that fish is still fun in my book, hey look at the bright side on it , no fish guts to clean ;D
Guys, last Monday I was on yer neck of the woods, I took my eldest boy and a friend to Plum Island looking for seabass, all we found were tons of undersized fish and the result was in favor of Mother Nature...no keepers. It was still fun
