Great site! Finally uncovered my 1989 V20 boat from its winter hibernation. Started cleaning and making a list of TO DO items for this coming season. Does anyone know if the side rod holder recessed panels are sold anywhere. My panels have small cracks in the corners. Does anyone have any ideas for repairing these panels. ??? They seem to be made from plastic. I would prefer to $hit can them and buy or make new ones if anyone have any ideas.

I'm helping a buddy look for the same for his Steplift. So far I've come up empty. If you find anything, please post so we can check out also. These were one of the few weak points that I've heard people bad mouth Wellcraft on (using plastic instead of molding some out of fiberglass. Same with some of the console panels as well. Oh well, if that's their only complaint, the boats can't be that bad.

Funny you mentioned the recessed rod racks: I just sent wellcraft a message last week regarding these. Mine are cracked too in the corners (class action law suit . . . just kidding) here's the information they sent me.

I bought a great set of rod inserts from West marine and they came from SSI P.O. Box 99, Hollywood, Md 20630
301-373-2372. Installed them in my V20 (1985)Minimum amount of cutting and they looked great.

drill a small hole at the very end of the crack to prevent further damage ( relieve the stress) then you can remove the panel and apply some fiber glass tape with epoxey on the back side and the panel will be better than new

Mine were in pretty bad shape. Flanges extensively cracked nad some pieces missing. Removed and on the backside reinforced or rebuilt missing chunks with fiberglass tape and resin. A little sanding and a coat of paint and you wouldn't know how bad they were.

I HAVE THE VERY SAME PROBLEM ON MY 1979 V-20 STEPLIFT, MY ROD BOXES ARE IN VERY BAD SHAPE TO THE POINT THAT , IF I TAKE THEM OUT THE WILL DESINTEGRATE, SO I CAN NOT REENFORCE THEM OR EVEN LOOK AT THEM.
THE ARE NOT SQUARE, THEY HAVE 2 60 DEGREES ANGLES AND 2 120 DEGREES ANGLES.
ANY IDEAS?

From what I remember reading the past couple of years everyone that replaced theirs, including my 85 V required the inner liner to be cut a little but worked fine and was a big improvement.

Mine are plastic and were cracked in the corners. The previous owner used 3m 5200 on the cracks and like someone else said 'you can't tell how bad it is'.
Its been over a year now and it could use some touch up. But hey, its a quick easy fix :-/

FP boxes are nice. When mine finally kick I'll be lookin at FP. Mine are 2 rods a piece with a gaff holder in the middle. FP has 3 rod holders each (store gaff in rod holder)
You might have to cut a little but worth it every penny. ;) Can't go wrong there. Check eBay too. I've seen them go for $50 a piece from FP on eBay.

AIRSLOT:
THANKS FOR THE TIP, I SEE YOUR ROD BOXES ARE A LOT SMALLER THAN MINE, I NEED AT LEAST ONE 67" LONG.
ANYBODY KNOWS HOW TO GET DECALS, AT LEAST THE ONE THAT SAYS V-20?
MY BOAT LOOKS MORE LIKE A V-21.
I REPLACED ALL THE TEAK TRIMMING WITH STARBOAR. TEAK IS BEAUTIFULL BUT THE SUN IN FLORIDA IS BRUTAL.

PLUS MY KIDS EVERY TIME THE CLIMB ON THE BOAT USE THEM AS A STEP. GO FIGURE!!!!
IF I DONT FIND ONE ALREADY MADE BIGGER THAN 67" I'LL GO TO THESE PEOPLE AND HAVE THEM CUSTOM MADE.

Wiseguy, What resin did you use? Epoxy or Poly? Did you color the resin? What weight cloth? I have about 1/2 gallon of epoxy resin left from another boat project, so I will probably use it on my rod boxes. Epoxy resin has a really long shelf life, about 10 years if stored properly.
WiseGuy
07-12-2006, 12:46 PM
The resin is epoxy (west marine 105 and 106 hardener). Don't know about the cloth. You may as well reinforce the corners and such while your in the mood and have your goop mixed up.
The good side was filled/leveled with marinetex, sanded, and painted with topside paint (interlux brightside - white)

I repaired my boxes as well. They had the typical cracks and bastardized edges, they came out nice.Used the same paint as Wiseguy but I added a black pigment to get a light gray color to "sorta" match the gray deck.

mine are busted up too going to do the same. i have several corners missing so i'm just going to rebuild out of glass and shape back to original. Lester you could just glass your holes smaller to use FP's rod boxes. It would be much cheaper to glass the holes smaller and replace.

I also ripped 1" thick pieces of pressure treated lumber, cut them to length, and installed them behind the gunnel walls. The screws go through the teak trim, through the flange of the rod box, through the gunnel wall and into the press. treated. What was formerly flimsey is now quite strong ;)

HEY GUYS!!!!
KEN, FPMARINE.COM CALLED ME THAT HE FOUND SOME
THAT WERE 68" X 18 1/2"X 5" (3 3/4" AT THE BOTTOM)
FOR ABOUT $120.00 EA.
I KNOW THAT 68" WILL COVER THE WHOLE LENGTH, I'VE GOT TO CHECK THE WIDTH THOUG CONSIDERING ABOUT 1" FLANGE THAT WOULD LEAVE ME 16 1/2"
I THINK I CAN FIT THEM.
IF I ORDER MINES KEN SAID HE WOULD ORDER SOME MORE SETS. ANYBODY INTERESTED?
