I'm thinking about buying a flow scan, I don't trust the factory fuel gage on my V21, any thoughts?

I put in a flow scan about 2 years ago, not diffucult to do, not difficult to dial in, easy to use. I like it, I believe it is pretty accurate, I never trusted my gas gauge. There are several models, aside from different one's for different applications, check them all out for what you need or like before you buy. There are also D.F. & G.P.S. Manufacturers that incorperate fuel management systems with there stuff. If you haven't gotten & are in the market for any of these electronic systems, look into this too, it may save some money & some dash space. Good Luck, Joe

I'm retired and I considerable older than most guys on this net and the computer age passed me by so I live by the Keep It Simple Stupid system (KISS) which works for me.I fill all boats up once it bobs below the half way mark as you never know what you are going to run into seas wise or for how long. The thought of running out of fuel has always given me the pucker syndrome ..When I hear it gurgle out the air vent I know I am good to go. I still use charts even though I have a GPS just in case along with two VHF's on each boat. We have a lot of million dollar plus sport fishies down here maxed out with electronic bells and whistles, space age thrusters, electric grouper reels , crystal clear eisenglass enclosures etc and they still hit oyster bars, shoals, miss buoys and GPS markers, go way off course, run out of fuel etc. Some of these young captains look very sporty in their matching crew Greg Norman yacht wear but I would doubt that they could run an ocean compass course which most little sea scouts can do their first summer..To make a long story short I would say buy one and have someone wire it up so it dont interfere with any of your other electronics but still maintain your tanks as full as possible..Frank

I'M WITH YOU, IBUPROFEN, EVERY TIME I COME BACK I FILL IT UP COMPLETE. YOU DO NOT WANT FLORIDA "FULL-O-MOISTURE-AIR" INSIDE YOUR TANK, IT CREATES LOTS OF WATER IN THE FUEL, BESIDES I DON'T FEEL GOOD GOING OUT THERE WITH LESS THAN A FULL TANK.

LESTERUS

P.S. MC: WHY DON'T YOU PLACE A SECTION IN GENERAL COMENTS WHERE NEW MEMBERS COULD INTRODUCE THEMSELVES BEFORE POSTING?

Boy I'm amazed installing a fuel management system stops people from filling, or refilling their fuel tanks. Having instrumentation doesn't make you run out of fuel, or off course, or into shallow water. Give me all the information I can get to make my decisions. I always start full, but as we all know, stuff happens, & I want to know as soon as possible if something is wrong, to make my decisions for the safest trip. I still carry paper charts, & plot a course the old fashioned way but I use my GPS also. Next thing you know people will want engines, & with electric start I'll bet, & it will all start with some new guy.

I have a flow meter that can be slaved to either my Navman GPS or fishfinder. Very easy unit to install, setup, and use.

When I do fill up, the gallons in match the gallons used exactly.

Mod7X: Welcome to the site..I'm with ya and I dont trust any of them either..I run a 57 Viking for a friend of mine sometimes when he wants to fish and it must have a short somewhere as it will creep up to full then slowly drop back to a third of a tank and after plane its right at a half of tank and this is after filling up..after 5 or 6 hours of steady trolling it will stay flat at a half of a tank but the port engine tank goes to empty or is all over the place. IT does not bother him but it sure as hell bothers me..Thats why its important to make sure whoever wires it knows what he is doing...The rate of how much you put in and how much you burn at a given RPM range is a pretty good idea should your gauge fail......Frank

Navman makes one for around $130.00. I'd like to have one, maybe next spring. They make good sense to me. It seems to me that you have no idea where your most efficient rpm/trim is each time. This will tell you.

Another thing on this subject. I have a friend with a Grady White Gulfstream (23ft) and it holds around 100 gallons in the main tank. When he first got the boat he "filled it up" only to find out that the thing likes to vapor lock or something while filling which made him think it was full, but he had room for 50 more gallons!

Now he has to slowly fill the tank to make sure its full.

Knowing whats in there before you fill it is key. I always know, almost to the gallon, when she's about to gurgle.

I'm with ya on knowing whats in the tank at all times. I've been using the Navman for about 3 years now and love it.

Blue, on that Grady, he's either got a partial block in the vent or he's filling with the front of the tank lower than the rear, whcih is quite common on a trailer.

I know he had blockage at first - similar to what I experience recently. He then had the tanks cleaned but I still think he has to pump slowly.

Boy oh boy does it take forever to put 100 gallons in slowly. Factor in that some gas stations only let you put in $75 at a time and you just might want to pull up a chair, take your shoes off and stay a while. ::)

I got the Navman Fuel 2100 for Christamas. Installed it yesterday. Pretty easy to install. We'll see how it goes. I'm stoked to try it out out on the water.
