Well guys the buddy that bought my stainless outboard bracket when I opted out of my V20 project was ready to get started this weekend so we did. He has an older, but pretty nice 22' Robalo cuddy that we are hoping to do some tuner fishing in this year. Having been in it last year in pretty rough stuff I am excited to see how well it preforms with this addition. It already has a hellishly deep V in it and will bust up the sloppy stuff extremely well for a boat it's size. 8)

We got going on it and started closing up the notch and building the top cap for the rear as well. I walked him along and let him do most of the work since I had allot of stuff to do on my own boat as well. He much preferred it this way as he is very eager to learn.

We got it closed in and sealed. The glassing will start this week or this weekend.

Sorry for the pic quality, this is just my phone, didn't have the good camera with me.

Looking good! Thats going to make a nice Tuna boat!!

The guy who is doing my transom refused to just fill in the area where the notch was due to the fact that my bracket would bolt up between the notch and a new section. If the bracket would have bolted up on the factory transom he would have just fill it in. As it turned out he found my transom was in worse shape than we thought. Now I can rest assured that my transom is in good shape, and actually stronger where the bracket will bolt up due to an extra layer of plywood in that area. :)

I agree with your guy. I would have done the same thing.

This one bolts up all under the notch...the small "starter" holes are already there, you just cant see em in the pic. ;)

Hey 2ndchance, did your glass guy maintain the curve of the transom or is it straight now? I've been staring at your picks and I still can't tell.

msbhammer
02-20-2007, 08:38 PM
Never liked that curve in the transom, No reason that I know of why they did it like that. Makes looking for a full bracket hard to find.

macojoe
02-20-2007, 08:47 PM
Looks like it has a bow to it?? Might be just me? But straight it fine also!!

Hammer I have a straight bracket on a curved transom, nothing a couple of shims won't fix.

M.J. have you looked out your kitchen window lately. What Bracket. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D :P

2ndchance
02-20-2007, 09:40 PM
The bow is still there. The way he did it was to remove the outer skin. The inside glass was left in place and the new wood epoxied and screwed in place therefor it maintained the original shape.

parishht
02-21-2007, 11:21 AM
The bow in the transom is for strength,
it is the same principal as a dam on a river.

Even though you may see some that look straight,
the dam is always bowed up stream.

We do the same with car and truck chassis,
they are built with a bow up from the ground and then
when all the remaining components are mounted,
the vehicle ends up level to the ground.

Looks just like mine now!! They did great job!! Did they blast all the old off before the new or did they just clean and repower over the old?

Stinky_Hooker
02-23-2007, 05:36 PM
They blasted it, antifoul primered it then powdercoated MJ. 8)

C YENSEN
02-23-2007, 05:40 PM
Looks great ;D I want one

parishht
02-23-2007, 06:25 PM
They put the antifoul on as a primer???

before the powder coat???

That goes against everything I know about powder paint.
Powder needs a good solid clean metal finish.

Isn't antifoul designed to shed?

Stinky_Hooker
02-23-2007, 07:07 PM
Not antifoul paint, antifoul PRIMER.

He said it helps the paint to better stick. The primer adheres to the stainless better.

I hadnt heard of it before either, but he builds custom race car frames and such and garanteed me that before the paint chips the stainless would bend. :o

I let it slide around in the truck on the way home ( I swerved quite a bit back and forth too) and beat it all against the tool box to test it. When I got it home the tool box was dented, but no scratch on the powder coating. ;D

Guys I dropped it off in pretty rough shape...lots of barnacles, old paint, etc....

For the sand blasting to finish he quoted me 150-200 about a year ago, but all said and done I payed 260 total today. Still pretty decent I think. 8)

heres a little update:

Well we didn't get quite as much done this weekend due to the low air temps and rain on and off. We did get the rest of the transom outside cleaned up and primed.

Here is my buddy Darren( boat owner) sanding out the last little bit before primer goes on.

http://www.forumpictureprocessor.com/pictureprocessor/images/100_0704_4.jpg

Here it is at the end of the day Saturday after primer.

http://www.forumpictureprocessor.com/pictureprocessor/images/100_0707_6.jpg

Its coming along nicely, but we really wanted to get paint on it. Oh well, we will this week one day. I am waiting on the primer to harden enough to wet sand it. Its drying extremely slow because of our cool weather. Warmer temps this week should help us in that department.

The Durabak is suppose to be in in a few days and we will prep the interior floor for that as well. I still have some glassing to do to finish up the new bilge too.

Stinky_Hooker
04-12-2007, 10:23 AM
Well the finish coats went on yesterday afternoon. Went have some glass work to do in the bilge today and we are prepping it for Durabak. That came in yesterday as well.

Wish me luck! 8)

macojoe
04-12-2007, 04:27 PM
What does that boat have for a motor? 20" either that or has a tall transom!

my 25" is way up on the transom on the V, Thats why I did not use the 1" for every foot rule, just would have been way up there!

Looks great!

Stinky_Hooker
04-13-2007, 10:16 AM
Its a 25" motor on a 30" transom MJ, thats wy its so tall.

Stinky_Hooker
04-13-2007, 11:40 PM
Here we go...finally got the floor rolled in Durabak and the transom and bilge finished.

I really like the way the Dback rdoes...it covers well, dries fast and seems to be pretty good stuff. We will see what kinda abuse it'll take, but if they can land helicopters on it it ought to be good enough for me. ;D

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v721/bbingsuperman/boat056.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v721/bbingsuperman/boat057.jpg

I could have spent more time getting the inner and outer transom smoother, but he was in a hurry and more than happy with the results. He just wants a good durable fishing boat and isn't worried about a few imperfections.

The back area will get a total of a half sheet of starboard. It will hinge to open the live well and hinge opposite that for bilge access. Ill post pics when I get it done...should be pretty nice. 8)

macojoe
04-14-2007, 02:16 PM
Looking great!

Did he get the smooth paint or the non slip??
I have the non slip and you will never slip!! But it is hard on the knees and stuff if you have to get down on it!
I am hoping after walking on a bit it will wear down the sharpness.

Stinky_Hooker
04-14-2007, 04:36 PM
Its the non slip MJ...worked great.

We got the bracket on this morning just ahead of the storms. *He took her home to hang the motor and get her tuned in.

http://www.forumpictureprocessor.com/pictureprocessor/images/Photo_041407_001.jpg

I remeasured after it was all done and Im worried it IS too low. I used a long wallboard square to check the height of the rear of the bracket (where the motor mounts) and I came up with 22". :-/

That would put it just right for a 20" motor, NOT a 25".

He is going to take it and mount the outboard and slip it in the water to see how it looks and works.

I could have SWORN I measured it out right the day we done it. I remember checking my math several times. I went 25" and then add the "lip" on the bracket for 27", not 22".

All we can do at this point is try it, but I sure hope I dont end up having to move that bracket. *:o

You with me now?....should be 27"

Airslot
04-14-2007, 04:53 PM
I'm with you all the way. I assume you used 4200 or 5200 on it? The longer you wait the harder its going to be to fix? Plus your gonna have the power head sitting five inches low on a bracketed boat. That ain;t good either... :(

Stinky_Hooker
04-14-2007, 05:02 PM
Yeah its got 5200 on it. Taking it back off today aint even an option. Its fixing to storm like hell and Ive promised my wife a date today. Shell be home any minute and Ive gotta get off this puter or Im in deep hooey. ::)

Im backtraking right now on the board trying to find where I posted for help on this and someone gave me the plans from a site. Cant find it......gonna look some more.

But yeah, Im about 900% sure its got to be moved. :-X

Im just pizzed cause I cant figure out where I went wrong. I specifically remember measuring over and over and over before we took the bracket down. I was fully expecting the tape to read 27+ a little while ago....I dont get it....Im stressed.... :-[

Bygracealone
04-14-2007, 05:29 PM
Man, that's a serious bummer!

I thought the predrilled holes on the transom looked really low, but I didn't want to say anything...

I agree with Air, you may want to have your buddy at least loosen all the bolts. The longer that 5200 has to cure, the more of a job it will be.

Anyway, I sure hope everything works out for you and your buddy.

Bygracealone
04-14-2007, 05:36 PM
Stinky,

Is that bracket level? It may be an optical illusion, but it looks as though the holes were a little off and now the bracket looks like it's off too... Like I said, could be the way I'm looking at it.

Anyway, you guys have been doing quite a bit of good work. Don't let this get you down; it's really not too big a deal; "just a minor flesh wound..." ;)

Stinky_Hooker
04-14-2007, 06:31 PM
BG, thanks....

It is an illusion I believe....we measured it center and level so and looking at it in person it looked great. Of course I measured the height too and we see how well that went.... http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v721/bbingsuperman/Smilies/bgh.gif

macojoe
04-14-2007, 07:00 PM
WOW :o Thats HUGE!!

Its simple, you forgot the lip!! Lip is 3" and thats what your missing.

Like you I mesured 20 times and in the end I amost drilled it wrong till a friend said thats 22" ?? I said no darn way!! But it was??

Any who if you going to use the formula you have to go 25 + 1 for every 12 set back.

I just did the 25 and so far have been fine.

Better now then later so good luck! :'(

Bygracealone
04-14-2007, 07:12 PM
Stinky,

Never mind about my previous comment. I think the reflection on the transom was throwing my eyes off. I'm sure all is straight and level.

Keep it going buddy, don't give up.

pikfish
04-15-2007, 01:48 AM
Stink, Sense you are going to have to raise the bracket anyway this gives you a chance to rethink the height. I would suggest that you go less than the 1" rise per foot of set back. With a lighter hull weight the rise/setback ratio is less. I would probably go with 26". It would be a real pain if the motor was mounted 1 or 2 inches too high but if it were just a little low you could adjust up with the engines mounting bolts.

Stinky_Hooker
04-15-2007, 10:08 PM
Ok guys...we MOVED IT!!! ;D

We put it in the water this morning with the bracket on it and things DIDN'T look good. :o The swim platform was right AT water level in a calm river. ::)

So....we pulled it across town to my place, snatched the motor, snatched the bracket, remeasured, marked, filled, drilled, faired, and repainted it in record time!! As I sit here she is nestled under cover drying right now. The new height put the lip the outboard rests on at a nice 27.25" high. I settled on this height after I spoke with Skools earlier and he stopped to check a couple boats in the boatyard he was in. Why was he in a boatyard when he has a yard full of boats at home? I don't know, I guess because he is a boat *****!! ;D

I also took this opportunity to drop several of the 27 bolts holding her on. Now there are less bolts, but they are going to be spaced out nicely so things will be more easily sealed.

Thanks for all the imput guys....I just certainly didn't want to move that thing when I was for SURE we had just finished. I am glad it is done now though!!!

BTW, that new transom, white powder coated bracket, and freshly painted Merc Opti look GOOD together! Even if it is a black anchor! ;D

I will post pics when all is finished....hopefully we will hang it all tomorrow! 8)

Hey Stink, Question for you or anyone else. I know by having the bracket to low it effects the motor and all, but does it also effect the boat when getting on plain ??? The reason I ask is, If i dont go with a bracket, I thought about going with a much wider swim platform. Instead of te basic 18 swim step, I wanna go like 30" wide, but know when teh boat gets up on plain, the swim platform will be in the water. Will this cause steering problems, having the platform in the water ?

Stinky_Hooker
04-16-2007, 10:49 AM
Hmmer, I would think that the platform would be in the water only at low speeds. Once on plane, even the bigger one would be outta da waddah.

A job well done.
Question: Has anyone else used Durabak paint? If yes, tell us about it. What is your openion on using it above the rub rail. Wounder how it would work as a keel guard.

msbhammer

Was actually gonna post a pic. once before on a guy who used that paint as a keel guard. If the boat stays trailered, should be ok I guess.

macojoe
04-16-2007, 08:09 PM
I am here!! ;)

So I said 27 and was off 1/4 inch ;D

I have had the paint for a while, but because of motor issues I have not used the boat much.

I can tell you this, it did not like being painted on the trailer fender, from twisting your foot it has peeled off.

In the rear of the boat I have some hinged doors, and one is touching the floor and has wore thur the paint, I am going to trim the door a hair to stop this.

You are never going to slip on the non slip!! as a matter fact I think its a bit to much! I am hoping that the sharpness of it will ware down after a little while.

Stinky_Hooker
04-16-2007, 11:32 PM
Woohoooo!! We finished her up today!!! At least my part is finished anyways. He took it home to hook the motor up and put on some hardware and such. He is going to let all the 5200 set up for a few days and run it then. Maybe, if all goes right we will be fishing the snapper opener this weekend in it. If not we will use my boat.

Here are some pics. Controls and all not hooked up yet.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v721/bbingsuperman/boat061.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v721/bbingsuperman/boat065.jpg

Here is an inside shot. We replaced some teak with starboard. The bottom is the really roomy 30 ish gallon live well.

The bilge area isn't quite finished up, we temporarily painted it with some urethane until he gets some more Durabak in for touch ups.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v721/bbingsuperman/boat067.jpg

...and yes the inside plate is off a bit, its because the right "wing" on the bracket has a little bend downward. You can see it in the second pic. It was that way all along and Im not gonna try and bend stainless. :o

No worries, it works just the same. 8)

We ran the boat today folks and things went GREAT! We put in at Rabbit Creek and ran out to the bay and across it a couple miles before we came back in. I had to run so we couldn't stay too long.

She planed out great, ran faster and had a smoother ride as well.

Not to mention reduced engine noise! Its definitely the quietest two stroke Ive ever been on. :) *

Before the top speed was 37 GPS and today we got it to 42 trimmed out. Everything is the same...GPS, motor, prop, RPMs, etc... 8)

We had no leaks and the bracket stayed dry inside. Even with the big live well in the floor full the motor and bracket height looked great from idling all the way to full speed and back again.
