View Full Version : Pulpit question

Having a brain fart hear and figure I ask this question.
When releasing your anchor from the pulpit. Does the anchor chain and rope go wild ?, meaning it doesnt stay within the anchor roller tracking. Thinking if a track should be installed. Even if its just two pieces of starboard and teh anchor chain and rope stays between the track went the line is going out.

Or would it be better to have that anchor chain thing a bob with the cap on it, closer towards the center of the pulpit, so the line goes straight out. But looking at other pictures, everyone has the anchor chain cappy thing off setted to one side. Why ?? ??? ??? ??? :-/

I never let the anchor just fly loose when I put it out, I alway lower it by hand, otherwise that rope will grab something and bust it.
As for the offset, I dunno.

I always let it drop, but guide the rope with my hands.

Hammer , *i just unwrap the chain off the cleat and let her rip. *the bracket on my pulpit is homemade and the roller is a 4" trailer roller. *it pretty much stays in the *track of the actual roller bracket. i offset the deckpipe because when you are taking in the line, you can pile it on the deck between the bow and the sliding hatch and still go below and pull the line into the locker later. * i installed the wooden part as far back as the sliding hatch would allow for strength.
when you do install yours, i would also suggest the oversized cleat, you can keep a bowline on it all the time and with the chain wrapped , the anchor ain't goin nowhere. you don't need any other device to hold it fast.. i used to dive with a guy that had a short speargun band in the top shackle of the anchor, when he pulled the anchor up he would just pop the band over the cleat. that also worked grreat.

Rerceived my 1 1/2 X 11 3/4 X 24 inches of Starboard Friday, all 16 pounds of it. Once I decide the pulpit design will start cutting and drilling. Will make pictures as I progress. What is the suggested/recommended overhang?
msbhammer

I'm guessing 8 to 10" inches I guess. ???

The overhang is 12", total length of the pulpit is 28". this is for the teak only, the roller sticks out over that. i also have a 3/8 piece of plywood in the cabin as a backing plate for the pulpit.
http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e203/ffatdaddy/POL_0263.jpg
I am sure you will get different measurements, but i have not had any problems with this setup.

Phats, thats plywood you have as a backing plate ??, looked like steel. Either way, I still love your set up. ;)

My over hang is 11" and total leanth of 24" like phatdaddy this is pulpit only, not the roller.
I used 1/4 dimond plate for a backing.

Plan to use Ipe for backer. For someone who doesn't know what Ipe (pronounced e-pay) is. It is an extreamely dense South American hardwood almost as heavy and dense as iron wood. Costs about $1.00 for a 1/2" x 6'' x 1foot. The Ipe I have are scraps left over from a $15,000.00 deck. No! is not from my deck.

Hey AIRSLOT, just recieved a phone from a buddy, works in construction, he might have some 1/4 alum. for us as a backing plate for the pulpit. Also put a call in to a friend at the boat yard, so if you cant find anything, I might be able to get us both a plate, free of cost.
I love Freebees ;D

Hey what year is your boat? On the 70's there is a 3/4 lip around the bow, thats why when you look at mine I have spacers.
But on newer stuff they did away with that lip so no spacers needed.

Heck, I just figured mine would come pre-assembled. ;D
Actually, mine will need some custom work as well, because I have a pre-existing deck pipe that is only 5.5" off centerline. Pending how much overhang, I may have to shorten mine by 5 or 6". Either that or move the deck pipe, which I'd rather not do.

Here's a question, seeing as how nothing sticks to starboard, do we put a sealant / bedding compound between the deck / pulpit?
msbhammer
04-28-2007, 09:49 AM
I say yes, silicone or something. I know they say nothing sticks, but squashing some sealant under the starboard around teh holes wont hurt.
Airslot
04-28-2007, 10:12 AM
I was thinking 5200 for this app, as it will somewhat adhere to starboard, and will certainly adhere to the deck.
msbhammer
04-28-2007, 10:23 AM
I agree, 5200 is the way to go, It wont hurt, thats for sure. Not sure when i can install mine. Need a chain tension, looed at them on E-Bay. A bit pricey. Might have to wait for the next overtime check to come in.

Slot ya might wanna try the same trick I did on my cap reattachment...sealant in the gap B4 ya tighten down...let cure and THEN torque 'er on down...shim it up w/ round toothpix...ya don't need much ;) ... then you'll have a ''compression'' seal to the S'board ...

04-28-2007, 01:22 PM
Put some silcone sealant/caulk around the bolt holes,
let it set, and then it will act like a gasket when you squeeze it down.
If you don't let it set, and you install the pulpit, the silicone will
set in the squeezed state and will not stick and work it's way out.
Just an idea.

04-28-2007, 02:11 PM
I used fast cure 5200, but use something, you no want the water to get in and rot the deck wood.

Hammer, what size and how many bolts will I need to bolt roller to pulpit?
msbhammer
04-29-2007, 01:04 AM
You will need five bolts at 5/16. I used lock nuts that just fit the 3" bolts. You may want to go 3 1/2 on
the lenght.
Airslot
04-29-2007, 09:20 AM
Uhh, Hammer, the pulpit is 1.5" thick, why 3" bolts? The roller bolts don't go through the deck, or do they? I can't tell where everything falls, cause I don't have mine yet, sniff, sniff :(
msbhammer
04-29-2007, 01:28 PM
To much overtime. Just home now from working the night shift. I need to stay out of the evidence room.
I used 2" inch bolts that just fit. Go with 2 1/2 if you want some of the bolt to slightly stick through the lock nut.

I put one bolt from the roller all the way thur, and two just thur the starboard.

I made my pulpit out of 1 1/4" teak, about 36" long and 12" wide. It will hold all 215 pounds of me hanging off the tip of it sitting on dry land. Very tough. Pics follow here:

Hammer, the oval one is bigger and I was pinched for space so I went back with the round one. Google "chain splice" and learn to tie the thing. Thats what I did and now I don't have the shackle and thimble on the anchor rode. Works great. Here's a pic for ya':

See, noo thimble, no shackle, and goes throught the deck pipe nicely. ;)

Use a smaller shackle! Worked great for me!
I want to change the pipe on my boat, CB gave it to mne and I was very happy to get it!
But the cover just sits there with a small chain, its always poping off in ruff water and then rolling around by the tiny little chain, I know that cover is going in at some point!!
I wzant a new one round or oval that has the hinge on it so I no longer have to worry!
