I have a 76 V20 which was damaged during Katrina and I was thinking of remodeling the boat. I was wondering if anyone had any idea of about what it would take to remodel her. I realize price will vary according to the level of work I put into her. The hull is solid. What I would like to do is replace the decks, add a bracket, replace the windshield, replace all hardware, add a floor tank, add built in rod storage, close in the transom with a built in livewell and bait station, and possible add a custom hard top. The way I look @ it is a used rig with a solid motor is going to run me around $25k, so I was hoping to get this done and re-powered for about the same. Also, anyone have any referrals for boat works in and around New Orleans?

Welcome to the site NOLA!!!
I would think that you could make a like new V-20 out of her for about half of $25k.
Of course that depends on your choice of repower.

Had a 05 225zuki 4 stroke on her and loved it. Will go with the 225zuki again, we got about 5mpg average and topped her out @ 53mph on the gps. That was with about 20gallons of fuel full gear and 3 guys. I grew up on this boat and just hate to part ways with her. Never been on a boat(20ft) that rode as well as or as dry as the V20's.

Definately fix her up, there are guys on here that can guide you through the whole resto if you do it yourself, and there are some folks here who are near you who can probably recommend good restoration businesses.

$24500 boat and motor
Thats what I plan on spending or less for the total remod and repower.

I know you love her but I'd let her ride and find a V20 that is self bailing (early 80's I think they started) and already has a 60 gallon belly tank and do just as MJ said and buy a brand new motor for it.
The reason I say that is because a full restore on a '76 with all the things you mentioned is gonna take a while and be costly. In the end you still won't have a self bailer plus you don't know what you might find when you open her up.
If you look around you can find the right boat, sell the motor on it, buy a brand new 225 zuki and come out for less than 20k.
Good luck on your decision. I'm just speaking from my heart. But I'd rather be fishing than working personally!

I'd take the 25k and buy something that doesn't need any work. If you are going to pay people do do these repairs you will be pulling your hair out by the time your done. If the shop says no problem it will take 2 weeks they really mean bring the boat over to sit for a month, then we will start the job, then set it back out side, work on it again after 2 months and you start *****ing, and after a year you may get your boat done. Now do that with each step and if you buy the motor first it will be 4 years old before it ever hits the water. Then after the first trip out you will notice some minor problems and the process starts all over again at the shops. Besides that its a great idea.
