Well guys, a local guy called me yesturday, he owns this V in town and does welding. He built this platform for his boat and knew I wouldnt mind having the same thing. He just got certified in diving and looks like we might be doing some swapping for dive gear for some alum. He's coming over Monday to measure it all up.
He will make the frame and I'll install it along with adding starboard as the platform. Gonna be 30 or 36" wide. Pleanty of room to board with keeping your dive gear on. Hope it have her done before the get together in June. ;)

WOW, that dude's platform looks GREAT!!...he does nice work, but it looks like the motor would HAVE to be tuned to straight position B4 tilting up...just me, but I'd avoid paintin' myself into that corner and leave center open enough for motor to go up while turned...it's gonna happen sooner or later :o ...
JMHO ;) ...
2ndchance
05-13-2007, 10:37 AM
That will look great on your V Hammer. I agree with Reel on being able to tilt the motor in any position. A full swim platform is on my want to do list.
msbhammer
05-13-2007, 07:00 PM
2ndchance, you have the bracket already. You just need to mount the starboard overtop the bracket and add supports on either side.
This guy...well kid better show up on MOnday. He does great work, but worried about being dependable.
He's a bit more relaxed now towards the police. A few months ago, some drug dealers from Wilm. came down with shotguns to blast away a guy who ripped them off. The drug dealers went to the wrong house and were at his house by accident. So when 5-O rolled up "us" we took them al down. He know loves teh police. *;D *

All kidding aside, I wouldn't expect it to sit that way with a 200 on the back, and that platform is barely out of the water. Take your own measurements when you mount that thing hammer.

But I was stuck on daywork, so we are still shoot ing for Wednesday morning to fabricate the platform. I then found out how he was stopped and cited the other day. The finish product for now. But....what about the other side...hmmm, well a money issue came up, that I didnt expect. I got banged really hard on the cost. So the other side has to wait a few weeks. The good news is that I have someone interested in buying the other platform that I just installed less then a year ago. That that will help with paying for the other side to get done. Then I got to cover the frame with starboard, buy and still install the pipe deck on the bow, get my dive gear out of teh shop that I still owe money on. So it looks like peanutbutter and jelly sandwiches for teh get together guys. *;D

05-23-2007, 09:22 PM
Saved by the bell MJ. Whew. Thats all the pics for now. ;D
The square metal is the mount for my X-Mas tree dive ladder. Down fall with the platform is we used the bottom paint line as a level line. Well my line is off, so the platform isnt level, but ya cant tell. But it still annoys me. *:-/
But with the other platform that "IS" level, once that is pulled off and the other side done up, I dont think you will be able to tell.
Ok, I'm now accepting comments from the peanut gallery. *;D ;D ;D

In expect you to go by the painted line on the boat, But I thought you had a pro making it??
But I am not doing much better!! I went to look at the truck today and he has had it 2 weeks, I don't think I will have it for at least another week! >:(
Should have saved the $500 and went to a real body shop!! :-/
msbhammer
05-23-2007, 10:06 PM
Well, Nate is a pro, and I knew the line was off slightly when I painted the bottom, but I forgot to mention it after he drilled the holes. But at the same time, maybe he should have picked up on it as well since he knows what he's doing and I dont ??? ???. Oh well, it's to late to fuss about it now. I'm still happy with it. His welds and design are great too. Gonna let him do the otherside as well. Hopefully in a few weeks "I'm Hoping".

What size Starboard you putting on there? 1/2 ??
msbhammer
05-23-2007, 10:39 PM
MJ, just came back from being outside. Wondering the same thing on what size to go with. Since the frame is well supported, I"m thinking I dont have to go so thick.
But also wondering if the starboard should be flush with the tubing frame or should it overhang a few inches.
Hmmmm ??? will have to sit and stair at it for a few days.

hey hamster what would he bang me for the same thing?
msbhammer
05-24-2007, 12:17 AM
Charlie, you could do alot with yours since you have an I/O. he can go all the way around the outdrive and actually have a hatch the lifts up or down infront of the outdrive, so you can actually walk all the way around the motor/outdrive. Your price would be cheaper because you would be installing it, but I dont know how much it would cost to ship.
200 bucks per side. Not that bad when you compare the basic one's on E-Bay or West Marine that are starting off at $150.00 plus shipping.
I bought mine off of E-bay less then a year ago and paind 90 bucks I think, plus shipping. Thats for the typical size too. My custom platform is 32x26 and can even go wider if I want to with the starboard.
My basic platform I installed last season is for sale, but I have someone who is interested in it. If he decides not to buy, I'll offer it for sale here before I stick it on E-Bay.
Gotta sell the platform in order to help pay for the other custom platform for the other side. Hoping that having a custom made platform will bring up the value of the boat when the for sale sign goes on her.

I know it's a matter of personal preference, but wet a piece of starboard and try to walk or move around on it. I've been on wet starboard when it can be wicked. You may want to rough it up a bit. Just my .02. Again, it's personal preference, but I wouldn't want a swim platform covered with it. I use an Armstrong ladder. They're safer for us old guys.
msbhammer
05-24-2007, 01:02 AM
Will have a non skid on the starboard. I also have a armstrong X-Mas tree ladder.

I think 1/2 will be good?? that 3/4 looks over kill, I also would go flush to the frame.
If you have to buy the Starboard they now have a textured one that is like non skid.
How thick is the stuff on the one you have now that you going to sell??
I wish I could have something like that!! But there seems to be something in the way?? ;)

Mine is 125 pounds, at least thats what Stainless Marine told me.

I would defently go flush, one less thing to get hung up on when getting in/out of the water, especially with all of your gear.
phatdaddy
05-24-2007, 09:29 AM
hammer, it looks great, i've always wanted a boat with a back porch. i think if it were mine, i'd put slats of teak. i know that is a bad word to some, but on a platform its great and you never have to do anything to it.
p.s. have you tried to turn the motor yet?
msbhammer
05-24-2007, 02:14 PM
Phats, I can tilt the motor up in any direction and it clears the platform completely.
The guy who sold Airslot and I quoted me 3/4 starboard 32x26 at $67.00
A guy in Fl. that sells the non skid starboard quoted me $120.00. for 1/2 non-skid.
Not sure what I will go with until I count my pennies. ;D

Reel, will use a 7/32 bit to get the hole started, then simply screw into the alum. with a 3/8. Thats how they mount the hardtops without having to through bolt everything.
On my platform, I through bolted the top and screwed the bottom. I was totally amazed and schocked when we drilled through teh transom. She was purdy and dry. ;D

macojoe
05-29-2007, 01:02 AM
I would NOT go 1" over at least on the motor side! Just go flush near the motor and it will be fine, no one will ever notice, and will give you a little extra!

msbhammer
05-29-2007, 03:03 PM
SKOOL, not sure on what you mean about enclosing the platform. ??? ??? ???
I was gonna add a lip to the underside of the platform, so you wouldnt see the tubing, then router the corner. But I think I just might router the corner without adding a lip to the underside.
I might also add a rail from the platform to the transom.

Don't make it any harder then you have to!! The frame looks great and always will go flush all the way around, just going to use more starboard to go all around and something to catch things on and rip off!

It will but my guess is that its not gonne be a really square edge. You dont have a circular saw?
Little tip...I like to cover my starboard with masking tape while Im marking and cutting it, then peel off and no scuffs! ;)

I think before your done you will cut back that starboard from the motor!
And you are going to mount the ladder and have to much lip, I think I would trim it close, and round over with router bit.
msbhammer
06-01-2007, 12:41 AM
With the staboard being 3/4", I guess there is a router bit that can do 3/4" curve ??? ???
Guess I'll be at Lowes checking out routers on Friday.

Hammer...3/8" to 1/2" roundover is all you need ... 3/4" bit on 3/4" material is too much ... if ya go that deep, you'll need a router table w/a fence to follow the edge...smaller bit w/ a roller tip will follow the edge of the material ... and look better INMHO ;) ...

If I was going I would have brought all the stuff with me, I have the router and all the bits.
But Lumber has you covered!! I hoope he knows how to use it ;) ;D
msbhammer
06-01-2007, 01:24 PM
Reel, your correct. I ran out to Lowes to just look...and seen that router bits are only 3/8 or 1/4 runover.
Well the starboard is in your corner now Lumber, show me what ya got. ;D ;D ;D ;D

06-01-2007, 03:04 PM
I've got a 3/4" roundover I used for the panels under the dash... you can use if you want, but I think it's WAY too much for 3/4" material...

Dive ladder bracket.
http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f153/msbhammer/DSC02661.jpg
Mounted the black piece the wrong way. Didnt realize it until it was bolted onto the platform. I then couldnt undo the bolts, so i had to cut two off and redo. >:(

hammer, hopeyou have better luck with that type of ladder than i did. good idea, but the plastic steps did not hold up, especially with 200 lb divers & 50 lb of gear. when the plastic breaks off there are some wicked steps made out of metal with sharp teeth that point up so you can step on them. save some starboard to make some replacements. i went with the garlick style

Hammer, that's turned into a sport model and I'm going to remember it when I get to mine (much later).
Can you reposition the ladders mounting bolts to use the top of the ladder as a handle or you think it will get in the way? Naaah it will get in the way. ;)
Cut hand holes in the Starboard or add a handle to the rear of the boat?
msbhammer
06-04-2007, 07:08 PM
The guy who did the pipe work offered to build me a ladder instead of going with this one. When I do teh other side, I might have him add a custom ladder to the other side. Depending on the cost of course.

Once teh starboard is screwed down, I'll be adding on a boarding rail that will mount to the transom or on top of teh gunnel cap. Not sure yet.
msbhammer
06-04-2007, 08:01 PM
Phats, looking where you mounted your ladder, do you get any flex at all ??
phatdaddy
06-04-2007, 09:58 PM
not any at all ,but that is on a 13 ft whaler we use for scalloping. it also hangs straight down.
this is what i used for a boarding handle, super big grip and plenty of room to get you hand around, even with gloves. it is a handicap bar i picked up at a local plumbing house. i'm sure home depot etc has them.

I like the line around it, but if you ever want to router the edge and have no line just make the bit shallower and you will get a smooth edge with no line.

Standard crap Hammer good luck, and as much as I like hearing what be happening I would recommend you go back up and delete a couple of your posts. IMHO, there be eyes all over and somethings can be misinterperted.
On the platform you are looking good brother, nice job with the router, always wanted to learn how to use one,
But in my opinion you need to drill holes or route slots, in that platform to allow water to pass thru easily otherwise it is going to act like a trawlers stabilizers but in the wrong way. In other words it will retard the rise and fall of the transom of your V as it bobs in the waves, which will cause your stern to not rise as it needs to in reaction to the action of the waves.
Plus if you get caught in a following sea it will force your transom towards China on every swell.
Slots are probably best and now with your new found router skills you can pop them out quick.
