I see a few 190hp mercruiser 4cyls on ebay. Would it replace a 170hp/470? Is the difference the bore size, and would all other external parts work off a 170 on a 190,head, manifolds, dist? Just wondering. It looks like they have the same block.

same basic long block, as far as i can tell even the same cam, the 180, 185, 485,190 were all the four barrel version(470,170,165 were the 2bbl). they jacked the power up to 190, then had to change the timing spec(pull them back to 4 degrees btdc) and fattened the carb up a little to make them live. Try and use one that has the 4 inch heat exchanger, radiator cap on the riser, and the delco style starter, they seem to be more plentiful and give better results. Check the riser and gasket real close, especially if it has the aluminum manifold. If a compresion test shows low compresion on #4, then it probably had a riser leak at some time.

Thanks Spare, Id like ta find a good 470 to keep in the garage for a spare. Parts and whole long blocks are getting hard to come by around here! If anybodys got one they want ta get rid of let me know.

Spare, just googled it and its a long way from me. I live 30 minutes from the Virginia state line. Ill keep you in mind though. Thanks! My 170 is running great now since i rebuilt it. I hope I finally got all the bugs out. My daughter and I took it out last friday and ran it for 6 hours off and on and it ran perfect. We put about 4 hours on the hour meter and only burned about 15 gallons of gas, I love it!

He's only about 20 min outside of Raleigh, but he's got plenty of stuff for those 3.7's
