Landed on Bogue Inlet Pier (yesterday I think). Check it out:

9-08-05 ............THURSDAY ............ NEW STATE RECORD! ........... Congratulations to JESSE LOCKOWITZ (Cape Carteret, NC)--- with his 175 lb. TARPON caught last night! ............. The TARPON was 83" long with a 42" girth, and took almost 1-1/2 hours to fight on 20 lb. test! .........We weighed the fish at 170 lbs. , then he took the fish to CAROLINA BAIT & TACKLE in ATLANTIC BEACH and GEORGE PRUETTE, weighmaster, officially weighed it at 175 lbs! ......... Jesse plans to have the fish mounted! .......... This has been a late year for TARPON; normally they arrive here to spawn in the NEUSE and PAMLICO SOUND in early AUGUST! (We're probably on the return cycle!)

kool, what's that large pipeline thing running down the center of the beach?

that was the armys pipe used to re supply the beach with sand. They dregged out our channels and pumped the sand onto the beach so we wouldn't have to worry about hurricane erosion as much.

Phester, you gotta realize, that "kid" is prolly about 6'2" and 220 lbs. He does look perty small next to such a large fish! If you go to www.bogueinletpier.com you can see where he's caught quite a few nice fish...including a 125 (estimated) tarpon a couple weeks ago.

P.S. About the height and weight of that "kid" - I really have no idea how big he is. But, if the fish is 83", that would be 6'9". Mouth closed on the fish would put the top of the head right at the top of the "kid's" head. So, how much tail is curled up on the deck? Is it 9"? That's the real question ;)

maybe I WAS quick to assume that the lucky angler is a kid . At first glance he just looks like a big 12-13 y.o. boy. Only other thing I can say is I wish I hooked into that fish!

Hey guys, a lady at my work has a place down there at Emerald Isle. She brought me Sunday's paper with the article.

Some info from the article:

* he's 16 yrs old (but still a big guy ;))
* can you believe they got it up with a pier gaff?? WOW :o
* old state record was 164 lbs in 1978 off Indain Beach pier
* It jumped 4 times, peeled 400 yards off his Shimano Tiagra 20 on the first run, with several more shorter runs.
* 20lb test mainline with a 40lb shocker.

Sratch part of that! Got ahold of some misinformation!

Here's the correction, which comes straight from Mr. Lockosomethin himself (taken from reddrumtackle.com)....

hit around 6:30

tiagra 20 reel, with 20 lb test momoi hi-catch blue diamond line

6/0 owner live bait hook, #4 red penn international trebble.

3 ft of 108lb wire spliced into 7ft of 80lb test mono for leader

a live bluefish for bait, almost a pound and a half blue (aka bubba blues)

faught it for almost two hours

took 3 gaffs, and 6 people to pull it over.

thats about it i guess
