A friend was visiting from South Carolina and was telling me it cost him around $500.00 a year to own a 17 ft bass boat in that state. I couldn"t believe it. In Florida a V-20 registration is about $40.00 a year and the trailer tag is $15.00. I was just wondering what it cost other states.

I just paid $55 for the boat for '05 and the trailer is $15 for the year. Maybe your buddy is including insurance? My insurance is about $350/yr.

Registration for a hull in S.C. is $30. I can't find my registration fee I paid for the outboard, but it's around the same, I believe. What he may be talking about is Personal Property Tax, which residents pay on cars, boats, airplanes, and the like, which are registered in the state. That can be pretty steep, and is based upon the value shown in their little books. Which was another good reason for me to re-fit my 22 year old hull instead of buying a new one! I haven't yet received the first property tax bill on my new Yamaha, though, and I'm not looking forward to it! :o

Mass, $60 every 2 years for V20, $53 for trailer 4000# every year, $40 excise tax trailer ($25 on $1000 Valuation) every year, and $25 on Boat excise tax (same valuation as above) every year.

So for me it is a total of $148 each year

Pipe, Is that a one time tax? That must have been what he was talking about. In fl you pay a % of the amount that you paid for the boat as per the bill of sale. If the figure is way off you have to get a statement signed by the seller. The interesting twist is that the boat hull is the only thing registered. I guess you could get 3 bill of sales(hull, motor,& trailer) and only pay on the hull.

The South Carolina Personal Property Tax is billed annually. I get two bills:
One for boat and trailer
One for outboard motor.
You have to pay your personal property taxes to renew registration. They gotcha! >:(

Pipe, I think those stickers are for 3 years...but you're right...if one doesn't keep his property taxes tidy, one doesn't go boating in SC... ::) ;D
