I'm thing about mounting a 200HP Evinrude Ficht with a 25" shaft. Has anyone out there had any experience with jackplates...as my transom is 20". Any recommendations or alternatives?

I had a jackplate give me some problems (cracked fiberglass), but the real problem was inside my transom. So, I think if the transom is sound it "might" be ok, but I'd shy away from a jackplate due to my previous experience.

Building up the transom is probably the best way to go. How did you do it? I like the way your's turned out. Was it a big deal?

you need to cut out the inside of your whole well area of your transoms glass. then cut out just the outter layer of wood same way cut a piece to fill just the center area then cut a piece to fit the whole well area you cut out that goes to the top all the way across. cut the skin off the outside of your transom too but cut it about six inches below the top ot the 20" area. straight across. yours should look like this say the black in cut.
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a46/Skools_Out/Other%20Boats/78Wellcraftchange001.jpg
cut out the fiberglass skin and first or outter layer of wood in the red area.
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a46/Skools_Out/Other%20Boats/78Wellcraftchange002.jpg
do the same to thearea in here whole back area of glass and the outer layer of wood. this should leave a center area of wood.
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a46/Skools_Out/Other%20Boats/78Wellcraftchange004.jpg
now cut a center piece of wood to fit in the center area you want to build up. and glass it in.
Then cut a piece of wood to fill the inside of the transom where you removed the skin. and cut a piece of wood to fit the area you cut out of the backof the boat, no that you have the 2 inner and outter pieces of wood cut to fit and fill the 20to a 25. glass in the new wood. then grind the blue area pictured of the old transom and put your fiberglass you cut out inside and outside back on with resin too.

now clamp it till the wood and old glass dry's then glass the whole area you ground and the center area with long glass. with several layers of glass like 5 or 6 layers inside and out whole area.

I watch that ship shop show from time to time, but the problem with them is they always work on and with nice new stuff!!
We need a back yard Hack (just my name for it) like Skool to show us other hacks what to do!!

Let me get this straight, your going to pay me a lot of money, keep in new boats all the time, get to work on fine classic boat projects as I desire. Get to play with all the new equipment even before it comes out. All the manufactures want to throw me percs constantly. I do photo shoots with boating super models ;D I live in FLA. I get invited to all the parties because I'm a celebrity. I have the best fishing and the best boats to do it on. HMMM. Yea he's not to bright 8)

Willy, I never said ''The G Man'' was a dummy...no question he's a bright guy...he's definately found a nitch that's fun and lucrative, even one that I'd LUV to be in...and I'm not sayin' I'd do any better...it's just that his personality grates on my nerves and from what I read on this board and others, I'm not the only one who looks at it that way...heck, I watch the show when I can, I even called him and got a lead that turned me in the right direction when I's lookin' for a prop for my motor...it may be I'm too particular, but he's just not my favorite kinda guy...now take Skools for instance...if HE were the host of a show like that, I'd watch it everytime it aired and buy video copies of each one ;) ;D...

Gotcha CB and Rap, I agree he is a little annoying ::) it's just every time I see a really great idea come to fruition, like that show it seems like some numbskull is bearing the fruit. Just like those guys you see winning the Big Game or Lotto, they are usually characters I chase around and lock up when I find them. I just figured out that life is one of those things that make you go HUMM and I try to get the best out of it like that show, I get 5 minutes of learning but have to put up with 25 min of HUMM. Now if Lord Skools wanted to do a show I will retire and start a production company and move to Carolina ;D. And I would also start a talent company to find the super models to use for Norton Snagger Boating Show
with your host Lord Skools
