took her out with a portable tank saturday and she still has her problems. there was a loud pinging or banging noise coming out of the carberator after she was warmed up for about 4 miles, after she started making the noise she would not go over 3100 rpm.
she is goin to the local mechanic here some day this week. :'(

Take a wooden pole like a toilet plunger handle. (MUST BE WOOD) Crank the motor and put one end against your ear and place the other end in places against the block, valve cover oil pan sides of the block. That will tell you where the noise is coming from. Use the stick as a Stethoscope to find your noise. That will locate the problem.
Old Racers trick for finding a noise in a motor.

we used to use a big screwdriver, but yes, it is an old racers trick... you must be really really old.

THANKS I KNOW ABOUT THE PIECE OF WOOD TRICK, MAYBE I WILL GIVE HER A TRY TONIGHT.
BUT I AM PRETTY SURE THE NOISE IS COMING OUT OF THE CARBURATOR. TAKING HER THE THE SHOP TOMORROW AT LUNCH, THEY SAID THEY SHOULD BE ABLE TO GET TO HER IN A WEEK :-[

Just my 2 cents but I have a co-worker that recently bought a albemarle that would run fine then poorly (low RPMS) and so forth. The carb was rebuilt prior to purchase so we assumed it wasn't that. After 2 weeks of changing everything we put a brand new carb on and runs like a top. Do not recommend rebuilding carbs they are cheap enough to buy new.

I had a friend that recently rebuilt the carb on his I/O. Ran super duper great for about 10 hours. Then, started to act like crap with the RPMS and all. So, he thought the same - new carb=no problem. So he bought the new carb and it ran great for another 10 hours. In the 11th hour, he's pretty sure the motor blew on him, said it was knockin around and would hardly even go. :-/

Well, MJ, this one isn't a V20, its a 21ft Dixie cuddy cabin. He thought about the bracket thing, but I think he's just going to sell it and buy him a ski boat. All his friends have fishing boats, so he really doesn't need one anyway.

A Dixie Heck it wasn't any good when it was only 1 hour old. They are pi$$ poorly built boats. I've seen several sunk due to factory issues.

I have sons your age.
Pinging is normally from an engine that is out of time or a bad setting on points. When ever you install points you must set the timing after then adjust the carb and set idle.
These motors are good engines, but as with any motor their are certain maintenance issues you must do to prevent problems.
Have the tech you go to install an electonic ignition and get rid of the points and condensor as I mentioned in another post. You will be glad you did!
As with any motor the operating temp must be right. This motor being an aluminum block makes it imperative the the temp never gets over 185. Norm operating temp 135 to 160. As I mentioned in other post change you anti freeze yearly. Keep your outdrive pump in good condtion. Never run engine out of the water without being on muffs. Change out drive water pump impeller every two years. Change elbow / reservoir every 3 years in run in salt water. You can check if you hold your hand on front of res. to hot to keep it there, hold hand on back cool to touch. Engine must to warmed up and running. Clean heat exchanger every couple of years. I do this by taking it off and using a gun bore brush.
Buy yourself and Seloc or Clymer repair manual for year of engine and outdrive.
I learned these things the hardway, cost me big bucks so I educated myself and do much of the work now.
Motor is simple to work on, send otdrive out for work as the tools todo the job cost to much.
When I got my boat and I had a few problems and was on forums looking for ans. a guy from NC e mailed me his phone number and told me to call him. I did, he had owned this motor for a long time and clued me in on alot issues.
I will send you my number and you can call if you wish.

THinking aout it did the engine run ok up until the pinging started? What was your engine temp then?

one of three things is wrong:
1} bad distributor cap, rotor, and spark plug wires - crossfiring causing missfire on intake stroke, backfiring thru carb
2}Crossed spark plug wires, causing same condition as above
3} bad intake valve, causing it to backfire thru carb when plug fires
IMHO

could be a cracked distributor cap that will do it too

Been there done all that!!
When I had my I/O everytime I went to fix something, it was $500+
Then there was the $1500 out drive :o
The $500 manifold, The rotted out hed that needed replacing, the gimbil bracket that broke and the bellows hoses that let go ect.. ect..
The list goes on and on!! I am so happy to be a outboard guy nw!!
