I am strongly considering one of those heavy canvas type, round top, car/boat storage garages. I feel, for my needs, something like that would be perfect....no more covering and uncovering after each time out, no sun beating down on it, no rain/leaves and of course a great place to have it in during its winter hibernation. Any of you fellas have/had/want something like that? I just started looking around the internet, so additional info/feedback would be helpful and appreciated. Thanks!

I was thinking hard about one of those metal roof type shelters. During the fall I'd put some tarps on the sides to enclose it. I think I can nab one for around $600.
How much is the thing you're talking about?

Phester, I've thought of doin' same...concerned about weight of snow and in general, how long that investment will last...BR's metal top is more direction I'm thinkin'....

I think if you go with this rounded top style, snow wouldn't be a problem, looks like it slides right off.

Tin, saw the one you posted, I think it's by "Shelterking"....rounded top is the way to go,snow load will just slide right off measurments are 14W x24L x12H, that particular one is 749.00 w/ all the bells and whistles. [Similar are advertised for less, however, it does not include some of the hardware or both zippered doors on either end ect.ect.] RAP,depending on the amount of natural abuse from the elements, they're are boasting 7-10 years longevity on the fabric/cover. I may need to go a bit longer than 24',hopefully not because then it would be considered "custom", which will add probably 25-30% we'll see.

That canvas top is going to cost you 8 bucks a month for the rest of your life.
Figure 7 years at $700 is $100 per year. So $100 divided by 12 months is $8.30 per month for the rest of your V20's natural (or refurbished) life.
I do like the looks of the canvas top though. :)

Probably the same we use up here when hitting the ski slopes!
I'm probably one of the few to move away from Florida because of the weather. 6+ months of that heat and humidity, no thanks. To each his own, I guess.

More like 4-5 months horrible heat and humidity, 4 months of dodging the Canes, then 4 months of pure fishing and fun nirvanna.
Maybe when I retire I can get Lord Franco to build a wing on for me to rent 4 months a year. Yeah Yeah thats it
Hey Bud how bout it ;D

And Phes I'm looking at the same thing, was going to do it this year but held off because a fellow near hear had one for his RV and said it was OK, had to re stake his twice due to high winds in a storm but his biggest complaint was that the material only lasted about three years before it started coming apart, degrading around the seams and hold down points from UV and wind and rain and snow. Got a price for replacement cover that he felt was way too much. Going to think about making something else my self

I'm up here in the snow and cold. A guy near the cottage has had one of the canvas types for several years seems to be holding up well and not problem with the snow.
Migrating birds have it right, they go where the weather is best at the time. Sun block 35 is what I use year round. Bill mc ;D

Sorry guys, that was cruel. It does get hot and humid here, but no worse than where I lived if Virginia. Hey Willy, I'm thinking I need to build a fishing resort on the River down here. I'll reserve a cottage for you bud!

Another option: Build your own durn boat barn. Think about it, for the same amount of money you can frame it out of 2X4s , it won't fatigue, and still have money left over for a 20 year supply of green tarps. Also you'll be more man than the neighbors. Especially if you use a screw gun. PLUS you can't nail nudie calendars to metal poles.

Franco, I knew you had a dark side...time to turn!!...
That particular round top canvas cover looks good, but Willy's post kinda rules it out for me...money you put in will be there much longer if metal... ;)...

I don't know how much lumber is there, but I can't build a boat shed for $700 any time soon.

I built my boat shed for WELL under $700. All wood with metal roof. 24'long by 12' wide and 14' high. ;D

More info and pics would be great. Did you buy the materials (wood and metal)l or did you have it already?

Ericbh1, 14x24x12 is a pretty substancial structure, one that I certainly would NOT build out of 2x4's... I also am not really looking for the fuss of permits, inspections and a bump in my already grossly inflated property taxes. Like almost everything....you get what you pay....those 249.00 types you see at the Price Club would be a pile of "shat" at the end of season one. It's just another elected expence of boating

Ok stinky, treated lumber? Did you have to BUY the materials or were they recycled? I just don't see how you'd could pull it off for "well under $700" if you had to buy the materials, but I'll give you the benefit of the doubt.
I'm all ears.... ???

Yeah Phes, not really very expensive. My main point was that it would never be paid for. Nothin wrong with it at all. Just pointin it out. I spend more than that on beer so I can't say a word!

OK here goes...I posted a pic of it a long time ago, but I cant find it...Ill take more tonight and post em.
I lied, its 12'high plus about another 8-10" over that for the truss height.
All of course treated
6 4x4x14...2' in ground (all concreted) 20.00/each=120.00
14-2x4x8 Trusses 2.97 each =41.58
7-2x6x12 brace across trusses 8.97 each=63.00
4-2x6x12 sides 8.97each=17.94
Concrete 6 80lb bags =3.20 each=50.00
hurricane starps 30.00
I used 12' lengths of v crimp tin that I got CHEAP due to the dents in em. but even at regular price you will be under budget. I would suggest going with the commercial grade corregated though as it isnt much more $$ I just used the v crimp cause I got it less than half price.
regular price tin is 13.00/12' length need 16=208
It is all also all screwed together with 3"galvanized deck screws...$25/box
total $555.52 including screws and straps! ;D
Ill take pics in a little bit, I gotta run home for sumthin anyways.....

Stinkman, do you have walls/sides....or is that what the tarps are for? I'd like to see your pics, thanks.BR, here is a good way to rationalize the 749.00....shrinkwrap@ 10-12.00 per foot, about 225$ and rip it off and throw it out in the spring. 225$ per year x 7= 1575 vs. 749$ and I get to use it 365 days a year, and lastly, I'll duct tape my nudie calenders!!
Blue_Runner
01-19-2006, 08:14 PM
So true Phes. I know I'd never shrink wrap my boat because I never put it up for the winter. Just keep right on using it. In fact, we've had quite a few 60 + days this winter thus far with more in sight! Calling for 67 on Saturday!
Also, think of the alternative of NOT keeping some sort of cover over your boat and the $749 is EASY to rationalize. Water, dirt, leaves, cat pee, hail, dust, snow, varmits building nests....all this can add up to well over $749. Bottom line, if you got a nice boat - protect your investment (even though it is a crappy investment).
Currently I'm keeping my boat under a metal shed like I the one I mentioned earlier. Its not mine, we are renting a house while refurbishing our main house and the shed was there already. Only drawback to this shed is that its not tall enough to pull my boat under with the top and enclosure on. It'd be nice if I could.

Ok guys here it is....No there are no sides, mine is as you can see next to a smaller shed and then a shed over my cleaning table and freezer so there is no need for sides. It also has an 16 inch overhang on each side. It gets a leaf or two blown under during a BAD storm, but no water at all. For a few more bucks you could add some tin on each side . You may also go with treated or even white latice sides down 4 foot on each side. This may please the Mrs. a little more as well. ;)
http://www.forumpictureprocessor.com/pictureprocessor/images/102_0368.jpg
I forgot to figure in a few 2x4s for angled bracing and for securing the trusses.
http://www.forumpictureprocessor.com/pictureprocessor/images/102_0364.jpg
http://www.forumpictureprocessor.com/pictureprocessor/images/102_0365.jpg
Note on the right side I left the overhang open because this spring I will be extended the shed out over the little boat. The little shed was already there and was just something I threw together with scraps when we first bought the place. I want to redo it to match the pitch of the large one and make it look nicer. :)
One other thing I will be doing is running an overhead waterline up one of the 4x4s and onto the middle truss. I will have a curly retractable hose overhead for cleaning out baby after a day on the water. This helps to prevent dragging a hose all over the place and scuffing up sweet thing too. ;)

Last but not least, on the left side is my fish cleaning station. Yes thats a 6.5" pioneer speaker running off of my stereo system in the shed. I gots ta have my tunes while Im filletin dem snappas!! 8)

that's some shelter you got there Cap, how long did it take you to build that? Stinky, that looks good what you got goin on there BUT, I know it's no concern for you southern boys, I've gotta think about the occasional 15"-18" of wet snow. At about 10 lbs. per sq. ft., suddenly you've got nearly two tons of a norton crusher on its way.
Stinky_Hooker

Pitch it steeper, deck it and shingle it! :D
With snow in the mix that is an entirely different story, I didnt think about that. ::)

i am in willaiamstown nj. 35 miles fro ac and 45 min from the del bay. it has not froze in there yet this season. it will though if it gets real cold. my plastic is white so it does not get hot in the summer months, but of it was clear plastic it prob would not freeze in there . it would take much less sun to heat it up. a small heater would stop it from freezing to. there are two layers of plastic to help to insulate. if you would like a picture let me know i can email but cant put it on the site. bb

i bought it used and paid $400 and had to take it down . it was 60 ft long , i made mine only 30 ft long , did not use all the pieces . about 24 ft wide and about 17 or 18ft at the middle it is a greenhouse you would see on a nursery, teh end is 2by 4 with plywood and two man doors along with an old window up high that i open in thne summer to let any extra heat out.it is not exactly a half cirle it has a little bit of a point up top. the front opening is about 16 ft wide and almost the full height of the greenhouse, so i can back my boat in with the encloser up. for a picture email me at
[email protected] . the plastic was about 200 bucks, for 5 years . new ones are expensive look up greenhoses on line. bb

The gy I bought my motor from built a carport off the side of his garage, a big one!!
Tin roof and then used shrink wrap for all the sides complete with zippered windows!!
Said at the time 5 years ago that it was 5 years old and it showed no wear at all!
