As you all know I went to the MSBA fishing expo and meet Capt K while I was there.
I brought my 16 year daughter with me, well we bought a few raffel tickets, and I had her do them in her name as I was to lazy to do it.
Well one ticket was for a 10' coustom Ron Arras surf rod vaule $350!!
We won!! My daughter is really happy!! then she has the gall to ask me to buy her a good real for it!!
I buy the ticket, I pay the gas, I drive the 1+ hour there and then again back, I pay to get in, SHE WINS and now she wants a reel??
;) ;D ;D ;D ;D

Schweet! 8)
Tough call on the reel. I don't think I'd buy my kid one unless I got to use the combo whenever I wanted. ;)

The guy who built the rod is M&D Bait in Wareham Ma. He is a great guy!!!
I will be going by his place to see what he has for a reel??
It will have to be something in the middle, as I am not rich, and I am sure it will not do the rod Justice, but she is going to love it!!

Spinning rod or convential rod. I used a Abu Garcia 10000l when I used to surf fish Cape Hatteras.

MJ, is she gonna surf fish much? *If not, swap the rod out for a complete boat rod/reel combo....or two *;D *(you know, one for you and one for her *;) wink, wink)
P.S. $350 spinning rod? I hope its conventional. ???

I have tryed to get her to sell, as we are boat people and a 10 foot rod has no place on the boat!!
But she says she will use on her own, she will be getting her own car soon and will go on her free time??
Hey what ever she wants, she loves to fish!! And she can't always go with me, she will be working full time this summer and it will be hard to get away with me.
What better way to start out, with a custom rod! The only problem is she will never appreciate a Kmart rod Like her dad did for years!

Shimano Spheros..crazy spelling, I know, but great open-face spinnin' reel...I've got 3000 and 8000 models of it...she'll need 9000 or better for a 10' rod...it's a top-notch mid-priced reel...won't be ashamed to have it on ANY rod... ;)...

I have a Shimano Spheros 8000FA on a custom 10' rod and it's a perfect match. Nicely balanced. Not too heavy. Very smooth. That would be my recommendation for a moderately priced reel. Waterproof drag is also a nice feature for a surf reel. ;)
If Scup Girl (she hates that name) is nice to me, maybe I'll give her a good deal on it. I get verbally abused every time I call that household. ;D

I have the Shimano Spheros 5000, nicest spinning reel I ever used, but I don't think Shimano is making them anymore, you can still buy old stock for a good price though, thats what I did when I went to Fla. I think they went to a new model line to replace it.
MJ how cool is that to have a daughter that is into fishing on her own even, you done good Mr. Bitterman ;D

I got this from the guy who made the rod:
Lamiglas XRA 1204, 1 pc ,10'
spinning .
You should get a reel the size of a penn 6500. shimano 6000-8000.
I built this rod special to handle Braided Line.
So you guys are right on the mark for the reel!!
