Yes, but they vary by state. Check with what ever state agency you register your boat with.

Delaware requires them to be on the bow.

all i see anywhere is the front half of the boat in contrasting 3 inch block letters. i cant find anything more specific even on the nys dmv websight.

They have to be on both sides in some states, only one in others, I think. I agree with what someone else said, there should be instructions on the back of the sticker or with whatever literature they give you with the sticker. I would think? I know NC did. I had 4 boats a year ago, so trust me - I know! NC is a one-side state, although I can't remember which side it is the numbers have to be on - I think its starboard?
