Looks like a good day to learn how to use a router on some starboard. Will post pics of me in the hospital with no fingers or a completed hatch cover.
We all need a STINKY Kitty. We can pull from the funds and fly Stink on up here so he can do all of our starboard work. :o 8) ;D ;)

yeah, the weather in the N.E. is awful.....showers mostly punctuated by the occassional t-storm and downpour. Supposed to be like this well into next week, I hope not

"Flood Watch" today. Hey phes, tomorrow they are now saying "mostly cloudy, 74, S 5-10". I think I can go, what about you??? Call me. Tomorrow is the only day in next 10 they are not calling for T-storms.

1 inch starboard. cut out 3/4 thickness to fit over the raised lip.

Need to do some sanding. Router kicked on me a few times. Smoking, drinking coffee and trying to cut. I knew this was a STINK Job !! ;D

Doesnt look to bad, but stuck now. Notice the hinges, they wont go flush with the top and I only have a 1/4 thickness below it so I cant go any deeper with the router. New hinges ??, add a few washers and raise the hinges on the one side so they are flush. ??? ??? ???

Was hanging out at the boat docks this morning before my shift ended. All the fishing boats were still going out.
I'd rather play with a router and loose a finger then bounce around and get wet all day. ;D

sounds like a nice overcast striper day, BUT, I'll be chopping thru the concrete floor in my lower bathroom to install new drains in preperation for the new bath....unfortunatley I think it will be an all day affair..... :'(

But I would have used 3/4 to begin with ;) ;D

if you have a small clean-out bit for the router you could recess the hinge slightly on the hatch side,..... with a little "finesse",.... one false move could prove a fatal mistake and you'll be wanting to do it over

Here is a photo of one of my hatches when I bought the boat. Notice the shims as MJ said those are factory. I made my hatch out of 3/4" and still used the factory shims. You could do a phester said and route the hinge in or if you have access to a plainer, plain the whole hatch down to the thickness needed. Keep up the good work. It will come together. Bill Mc ;D

Look for some offset hinges. I'm sure they're available.
Regarding heavy rain... My bud in NC found out why folks keep johnboats tied to the front porch. :D

Hammer, if ya got a table-saw, slice a couple of shimms to go under the hinges...looks like about an eighth to three sixteenths should do it...careful w/ those fingers... ;) ...

Just my two cents,

use a straight router bit and set the depth for the hinge thickness.
This will make it flush with the top.

Color and weight say brass.

Grind marks say brass as well, copper would have mushy scrapes and easier to smooth.

I would route a recess in it if you are deterined to stay with the 1", but like MJ I would have used 3/4 to start with. :D

Hammer, put some kind of STOP to keep that purdy new hatch-lid from layin' over on the cleat behind it...Bet that's what breaks all these things to begin with ... hate to see all that good work go to waste :P maybe a chain or SS coated leader inside the box to the lid to stop it from slammin' over on that cleat...just a thought :) ...

Yeah...I'd forgotten about those...I've used them B4 and they work great...think mine came from West Marine...
