With a full tank of gas (assume 60 gal single tank) how far will you travel on open water to reach a fishing ground?

Boater, the ''rule of thumb'' has always been: of your available fuel, use 1/3 to get there, 1/3 to get home and leave 1/3 for reserve...using that, you have 20 to get there, 20 to get home and 20 in reserve....you'll have to determine your burn-rate at whatever cruise speed is right for your boat...for that you'll need a fuel-flow meter or fill it up, go cruise around for an hour (constant running), then fill it up to see what you've burned off...the meter is more specific, but the cruise and fill will give you a pretty good idea... ;) :D...

I have 65 gal and have been 30 miles off shore, no problem, with a 175 Yamaha

Boater93

Been 55 miles away from inlet and back trolling most of the day, used 50 of 60 gallons, to close for comfort so putting a fuel management system on as we speak.

Tracy,
Which fuel management system are you looking at?
I may put one in during the off season.
Thanks

Keeping in mind what RAP said about the 1/3 rule:

I traveled 63 miles last winter on 20 gals with my 140 Evi, so with your numbers, I would say depending on your motor....somewhere close to 60 miles.

So far 36 miles away from the inlet one-way. Trolled for 4 or 5 hours and headed back. Burned 36 gallons of fuel out of 60 gallon tank.

RAP hit it - 1/3 rule all the way!

Been out 30 or so miles and trolling all day long on 50 gals....had half a tank left at the dock. The Bahamas aren't outside of a doable range tho' best run in groups.

I typically will run 20-30 miles offshore to fish and back. *Trolling after arriving at the deeper water for a lot of the day. *Mileage was much better when I had my 25HP on the kicker for trolling, but I still do it with my 175 HP Ficht injected engine and only burn 20-35 gallons a day.

My V-20 is also a Bahamas Veteran from the previous owner. I would go on the right day. Floatilla all the way.

I used to have an 18' CC that had no fuel gauge and I would run way too far out in that boat without a clue. *I can remember coming back and filling the tank up to the exact capacity of the tank. *Basically ran on fumes and got lucky 3-4 times. *STUPID !
