Hey Fish, look in my gallery. I found some short tube rod holders @ marine connection. I am assuming you meant it wasn;t deep enough above the rod boxes to mount standard rod holders

I have a buddy with an '83 V20 that cut the tops of the rod boxes with a hole saw to allow the rod holder to extend down. It really only intrudes a few inches into the top of the rod box and is negligable IMO.

franco, i was actually refering to the width of the top of the gunwale... looks to be about 3.5 inches wide at best.

hey rap, the gunwale tops on your 74 are very different than the ones on my 86. im going to grab one and see if it should fit... then i will add 3 more. i just realized that when i junked my sea ray, there were 4 lee's stainless rod holders in the gunwales... what a jackass!

Heres what I did. Scotty flush mount rod holders on an 82 model. These (black rectangles on the gunwales) are the receptacle for the removable holder that fits in to them. No pic of it together and the boats is put up for winter or I'd take one for you..
Gives a clean look when not used. The holder can be set in multiple positions hor. or vert. Seem strong - at least good for where I'm at. Come in white, grey, or black. and just fit that ridge perfect. Check Cabelas for a picture (they have the same thing under their brand)

thanks wiseguy and nice rig. i dont think i would feel comfortable dragging an umbrella on 300 feet of wire in one of those... sometimes im not crazy about pulling it in a stainless steel holder.

Mine are like wiseguy's but I used the side mount brackets. They work well fo r trolling for Walleys on Lake Erie. Bill Mc ;D

You saltwater guys have a different fishing vocab! And a lot bigger fish for sure! What is dragging an umbrella ?

wiseguy, it is a rig that actually looks like the frame of an umbrella (the wire frame) with tubes or rubber shad hanging off... 9 baits so as to simulate a school of fish, which is trolled with stainless steel wire which depending on how far out, will act as a sinker... 100 feet in length equals 10 feet deep. 300 feet of wire with an umbrella rig on the end trolled 30 feet deep with the potential of being hit by 1 or more blues or bass is the time when you need everything to work just right, from the rod holder all the way down to the rig.

I got a buddy who is contemplating just pulling that with his downrigger rather than an actual rod and reel.
Interesting concept.

Downriggers work well too. They allow you to get your umbrella or other offerings to a specified depth without the use of wire line or lead core line. Therefore the tackle isn't so specific to just one style of fishing. 8)
