View Full Version : Cold nights ahead

I am not planning on fully winterizing the boat until at least Dec 1st, Black Fish are fun ;D.
Are there any steps I should be taking with my engine/boat to get through the freezing nights until then? I figured I would pour some antifreeze into the hatches and bilge area to prevent freezing, but not sure if I should be doing anything else.
Thanks!

I don't think it's necessary to put anti-freeze in hatches and such. Do they ever totally fill w/water?

What state do you live in?

They dont totaly fill, but they do get puddles in them. I am in RI, so it doesn't get really cold until Jan/Feb, but we do get nights below freezing.

do you keep her in the water or on the trailer? in the water i would say maybe a little antifreeze in the bilge, on the trailer keep her tilted back and the plug out ;D

....what Cy said and tilt the motor down too. If you leave it up water can hold in the lower unit and freeze.

I 2nd all said above and emphasize BR's suggestion...tilt boat up so it drains, then nothing to puddle...and tilt motor down after each use to drain thoroughly and store w/ motor tilted down also...been following this for years w/ no problem... ;) :D ...

Good advice on lowering your motor. When I bought mine the owner had the motor raised so that he could raise the front end higher. Water stayed in the water pump and froze. I had to replace all of the pumps components. Once you have your motor lowered turn it over quickly, don't start, this will help expell any remaining water.

Winterizing an Evinrude E tec, 3 quick turns of the key and your winterized! Billy Mac ;D

Thanks for all of the advise. My boat/trailer sits on a slope to the front, so I have been jacking it way up so the water will flow out the back, but it does not allow me to put the engine all the way down. I think I would rather have a litle water in the hull (put some anti freeze in) and make sure I have the engine all the way down.

How will you get antifreeze out of the bilge once it's in there? If you let it out by way of gravity later, make certain you contain it or it could kill pets. You don't want to pump it out with your bilge pump.

Mine still has a very slight tilt. I think you'll be fine as long as you tilt it down as far as possible without hitting the skeg. ;)
